Yep, I only have one Golden one but three Blue, so we could still tell which one was lucky!!! Sad isn't it? ;D Then from top to bottom excluding Lucky, there is 'Bob', Goldy, Spotty and Seaking! We really are sad aren't we? ;D

Was going to do some gardening, but thought I would look at the pond for any frogspawn. Low and behold I have lots of baby Comets. I knew we had some last summer, but thought they would get eaten, so I tried to save some. First attempt, was a disaster! I got about 7/8 babies into a trug, filled with pond water, only for me to trip over and empty the contents amongst the grass. I managed to save two, but never mentioned it, as I was so upset (I know it was an accident) with killing the others! A few weeks ago, I took out a dead plant, forgot it was a tender one, and out with the plant came another tiny baby, so scooped it up and put it into the plastic container in the kitchen, alongwith the other two. Jennifer was wondering what was going on with me rushing in holding something in my hands!! Now just a few days ago, I saw a large baby swimming about and thought one more had survived! Well there are loads, mostly hiding underneath the pond ice protector!! I counted at least 10 maybe 12. Here is a picture of some, I took others but the auto focus worked on the netting, so will try again later. It's cheered me up a bit, but I need lunch, before I need to go to see my councellor, in about 40 minutes time. Keith

How fantastic! We could do with making our Pond bigger, the pump and filter could handle it, but the question is who's gonna dig it all out

brilliant Keith - as for the others on the lawn that didn't make it, you have nothing to reproach yourself for, as you had their best interests at heart. It was just one of those humbugging things called an accident.

How's your pond coming along Keith? Not bad, though with all the ants nests around it, I have had a break from doing things there. I must have about 10 separate nests around it's perimeter and I don't want any more attacks from them. I have recently bought a wiring system for the pump and UV/filter, so will get on with doing that soon. It's one of those pre wired sets, that you don't need a qualified electrician to install, though I am still feeling funny about drilling through the house, never done it before. I need to take out an ivy as well, so I can route the cable. I don't think there are any nests in that one, so will keep an eye on things for the nest few days, just to be sure. Pond itself is doing OK. I did a clean out a few weeks ago and sorted out the plants, may need a few more to feel the gaps made. I took out the Parrots Feather, it's done it's job now! I also reduced the Hornwort (ceratophyllum) coming up too, so the fish had more space to swim in!! ;D Both lilies are flowering OK, all fish are fine, though I did have an upsetting thing on Sunday. I found a dead frog tangled up slightly (one leg) in the netting, that's across the pond! Was it a weak one and died of a heart attack? I've seen frogs bonking on the net before, so don't think the net caused the problem. I hope not anyway. I have the solar powered air pump up and running again, though like I said, don't think it's doing that much good. After I installed it, the sun went away for a few days, if not a week! Will check on the state of the ants later today and maybe get on with the rest of the work, needed to be done. We need to go out and decide what chippings we need to use for the surround, as well. Maybe that is for this weekend, probably Sunday.

I guess you have a net over your pond to prevent the heron eating your fish for breakfast. Could you cover your pond with something more rigid. I've seen blackbirds caught up in netting covering plants too, poor things. Is your solar air pump the same as mine Keith? smartsolar.com/uk/product_details.php?cat=1&pid=AIf so they can be adjusted to take account of the fact that the sun doesn't shine as strongly here as it does in Malaysia where they are made, mine didn't need any but perhaps yours does. I've replaced the tubing for a black and more flexible type and replaced the air stones too. I have a wiring system (Heron Halt) that will go around the pond, but want to wait until the waterfall and pump are up and running before it goes in. We were told by a neighbour while I was building the pond, that a heron wiped out his pond, so the netting was a stopgap. With me birdbath and the little barrel pond, birds don't seem to bother with the big pond, though I will keep an eye on things. The pump does look the same. It works OK, just not what I was expecting. I thought about connecting the two outlets together and putting one airstone in the pond, but didn't have any t-pieces left at the time. Might still do that, to see if it helps. I didn't know it had an adjustment, will look at it tomorrow, a bit dark now! Just looked at your link again, 180 litres an hour is not that strong really, so maybe I am expecting something it can't give!! 180lph would run an air operated filter in a tank that was no bigger than say 400 litres and I have nearly 1000 gallons in my pond!!

I would really have liked this one Kieth ... maybe next time. The motor can be adjusted apparently, it needs to be either moved closer to or further away from the magnets, can't remember which atm, you need to experiment when the sun is shining. They say the worst time on a hot night is about 3am, so would that cover that period in it's '6' hours? Not sure, but obviously it's better and wish I had gone into it a bit more like I said. I'm going to check on the ants in a while, so I can get on with the rest of the surroundings to the pond. I don't think there have been any bird's nests in the ivy that needs coming out, but will check first!

They were all quite pale, so wondering whether they are the Blue Orfe!! Probably as goldfish fry, as we all know, are black. If they are Blue Orfe your pond is going to be full to over flowing with fish soon - is it large enough? No, but I will probably exchange any extra for fish food, like I did when I bred my tropicals.

I didn't think it was worth starting up a new thread, but here is my very first pond I made all those years ago. As a hole.. Pond initially complete.. I have another picture of when I added a small rockery to it, but as yet, can't find that photo!! Edit. Not sure if it worked, but here it is with added rockery. Excuse the fence panel gone, it went in some high winds we had. We soon replaced it.

We had no fish, but lots of frogs came to breed and we had (at least) one huge toad. Bird life was abundant, too. It was this garden that taught me chemicals weren't needed in gardens, if you have the wildlife.
