I've had a water feature for about a year and a half now, and always bring it indoors over winter so that the solar panel doesn't get damaged by frost. Is this really necessary? I should point out that the sun is so low in winter that the water feature doesn't actually work, but it would save space indoors if I could leave it set up outside.

Good question! unfortunately I dont know! I have a solar water feature too its a solar island fountain and I have brought it inside too, I was more worried about the diaphragm being broken by ice.

Its the membrane inside the pump, yes, ;D I know this because I used to keep fish. Before that it was a mystery to me too!

I don't know the answer I'm afraid Plocket but I can say that I have solar powered lights in my garden and they stay outside to endure any weather and they still seem to work ok.

Hum. I might try setting it up again soon then, partly to see if the sun is high enough in the sky to make it work!

It is recommend not to run pond fountains and water falls during the winter because the water will obviously freeze. It's probably better to keep it indoors to avoid frost damage. What sort of water feature is it? Do you still have the instructions for it Plocket?

I've no idea where the instructions are The witch, but it's one of those solar panelled bowl things. There's a main basin and the water is pumped up to a raised smaller bowl, and the water then flows down into another, and then a third bowl. They are all glazed and look fairly strong but I'd hate to lose it.

Sounds like it would be better not to run it through the winter then especially if you don't want to lose it. Better to be safe than sorry.
