As we're growing our own veg, I'm keen to try new things (altho not broad beans <shudder>
I bought a packet of Kohl Rabi seed yesterday..on the packet it says that it has a nutty flavour...but not much else...anyone grown it before? and what does it taste like ?

I grew it once a few years ago but nobody liked it much sadly. I might have another go now I only have 2 fussy person to cook for ;D Have you thought about having a go at Swiss Chard Cheery? That's rather nice - stalks vaguely celeryish and the leaves like spinach and it's very decorative too. Needless to say OH wasn't impressed with the celery flavour (detests it) but I liked it.

I planted 20 seeds of Kohl Rabi end of Jan, i tried potting them on and I lost the lot! They really don't seem to like transplanting!
Just thought it might be worth mentioning.

They definitely do not like transplanting, though you can grow them in modules and plant out as long as you do not disturb the roots. We have been growing them for 30 years now (sheesh!) and they are really nice. The modern varieties are even better as they can be allowed to get bigger without going woody. Kohl rabi mash is superb stuff (butter and pepper!). They are also very pleasant roasted like potatoes or parsnips. They do like a fair amount of moisture to grow well. Finally, it is said that given a choice animals which eat turnips or swedes will eat kohl rabi first as they taste so much better. I suppose the taste is rather like turnip but less pronounced.
