My catalogue came yesterday and I see they are offering hardy lemons, limes and oranges - all edible not ornamental.
Supposed to be hardy down to -10c.
I am tempted although at £49.95 each they ain't cheap.

I've tried all three of those fruit trees over the years and I've now given up. I've found them nearly impossible to overwinter without them either just striaght dying or losing all their vigour. My Grapefruit kept succumbing to black sooty mould all over its leaves and the Orange when it managed to fruit had such miniscule and bitter oranges it simply wasn't worth the bother. Despite what 'they' say about their hardiness I have always found that they need winter heat and a lot of light to keep going over winter. I can't really provide either of those so I haven't got any now. On the other hand, my neighbour has a Lemon tree in her conservatory which is laden with fruit every year. You've either got the touch ot not - I haven't obviously.... and that sounds quite pricy to me, Mick. I'm sure you can buy decent plants for less than that.

I don't disagree with your misgivings goat-woman but they insist that these are new varieties and not conservatory plants. They are sent in 5 litre containers (although I have no idea how big that is). I do have a nice warm spot on the big decking area at the end of the garden and in my minds eye they would look lovely there. I've tried all three of those fruit trees over the years and I've now given up. I've found them nearly impossible to overwinter without them either just striaght dying or losing all their vigour. I think it's good to grow fruit wherever you can. I bought Eldest a Ballerina fruit tree last year for her birthday (she was thrilled...) and it has already produced several apples. This year she/I will repot it into a much larger pot. I think the key thing is very good quality compost - like John Innes 3, and making sure it gets enough water. At least you can move the trees if frost threatens to protect the blossom. I have a little Olive tree in a pot which I pruned really hard last year which looks much healthier now, a Fig tree which is gorgeous and I may even have two Citrus fruits hanging on to life but I haven't checked them for a while. I shoved them in the PT last Autumn in a grump cos they were so pathetic!
