I used to love cucumber but lately I cant bear the taste of them! has anyone else noticed he taste has changed?
Are they the same as home grown I was wondering if they have done something to the seed as well! as they have definately altered the taste of the bought ones. Or is it ME have my taste buds altered and Smell.

Home grown ones taste quite different IMO. I grow them every year and love them but my granddaughter thought my fresh ones were 'disgusting' compared to the supermarket ones she's used to ;D I think the fact that they are always encased in a plastic tomb in supermarkets is part of the problem. I try and avoid those....

I HATE that plastic stuff around them in supermarkets! And the middles go soggy very quickly too. I haven't tasted a homegrown one for years but I do like the supermarket ones - until they go soggy.

The "condom" around them is indeed very annoying. (sorry for making that comparison but it is almost a regular joke in the Dutch supermarkets and the phrase can be removed should any one so wish) Funny mine do not go soggy inside maybe I eat them too fast? Anyhow I plan on growing a yellow variety on the allotment. Not a clue how that one will taste. Last year I was given some cucumbers by a fellow lottie keeper. They were a lot sweeter than the supermarket ones.

I like the condom comparison. ;D I've just 'opened' another supermarket one and this one tasted different - it definitely had more flavour, or at least a different flavour, than other ones I had. This one is quite long, quite crinkly and slim - it sounds terrible but it wasn't. When I sliced it the slices were almost flower shaped, very in-and-outy. The flavours must vary in the supermarkets too I suppose. : The yellow ones sound interesting, dutchy - I can't even picture it let alone imagine how they'd taste. Bet they'd look great in salads.

I like cucumbers still warm from a sunny GH...they do taste better than mass produced ones imo. The ones I grew last year didn't keep very well tho (Burpless Tasty Green) so I'll prolly go back to Telegraph...

It might sound funny : but everyone new what a cucumber smelt like before they tasted it BUT these new ones dont taste or smell like cucumber to me !! Im going to buy one from the market and see if its different from the supermarket ones ot Im going to grow my own and take it to one of the family to look after when I go away.

I grew Crystal Apple last year but I didnt like the flavour, too bitter no matter what size I picked them, might try telegraph next, or Burpless, or one of the older varieties.

I have a couple of spare cucumber seeds if you want them Maggy...they're from D T Brown's 'Petita F1' and I quote from the packet. 'A prolific cropper producing small, dark green BITTER FREE fruits. CMV tollerant and resistant to leafspot and gummosis.' ..whatever that it... ;D
send me a PM if you want a couple of seeds..cucumbers are pretty reliable when it comes to germinating so you won't need more than that ;D
oo they need a GH...have you got one?

Some of our cucumbers were bitter the year before last. We found out that we hadn't removed all the male...or was it female flowers?
Apparently, if they're allowed to pollinate, the fruit will be bitter.
They were nicer last year ;D

Er how do you tell the difference? Or is there a beginning of the fruit visible with the females ? The female flowers have a slight elongated bulge behind the flower that when successfully pollenated swells to become the cucumber. If they are not pollenated then that bulge withers and drops off.

I never bother removing the male flowers on anything...too idle, she is. I always have a total glut of cucumbers though and they don't seem bitter.....so I'm not convinced it makes that much difference...

I only do it because my big sister told me to....
Yep...what Sleepy said..the female flowers have teeny tiny baby cucumbers as their 'stem', whereas the male flowers just have an ordinary stemmy stem... ;D
