I've grown ordinary white cap mushrooms in kits successfully before but the Suffolk Herbs catalogue is offering Shiitake, Lion's Mane and Oyster mushroom kits at reasonable prices this year...I am very tempted as I do enjoy a good mushroom and they are sooo pricy to buy. Has anyone ever done this before? Or had a go at the log kits? They sound interesting too..... I love to hear please.

I've often thought about buying a kit, I love mushrooms but my OH hates them with a vengeance! Really? That's a shame - one of the few things my OH really loves! I love them too - really flavoursome and a godsend when cooking for a fussy vegetarian!

I've never tried a kit but watching your own starting poking through the compost must be fascinating. If you've tried other kits before I'd give them a go 4P.

I had a go once without much success I must have got maybe a dozen mushrooms despite following the instructions to the letter, maybe it was a duff kit maybe I gave it the black thumb ...dunno :

I've tried boxes twice without any success. What's the secret then?

I've tried boxes twice without any success. What's the secret then? I dunno! I have found in the past that keeping them in the dark was better than in shade, but to be honest, the last box I tried I got zero mushrooms and chucked it away in disgust......I really fancy having a go at the exotic mushrooms next year....

4pygmies, I've had a look at Suffolk Herbs website, great site thanks, but I can't find the mushroom kits, I'm probably being dense - answers on a postcard please! - where are they please?
Have you decided whether to try them yet?
The witch, we've gathered chicken of the woods, ceps/penny buns, amtheyst decievers and others and cooked them. I confess, hubby is a lot more confident about them than I am. We keep looking for chantarelles and morelles (around spring time) but haven't found any yet.

I did it many years ago, with good success. Maybe should give it another go, Jennifer loves them. Craig absolutely hates them, unless their hidden well! If I remember correctly it is the dampness that leads to success. Keith

Have you decided whether to try them yet? Aaah...that's because they are only in the paper catalogue...sorry! Mind you, I think the catalogue is wonderful and a thing of beauty anyway so you could always send for it Myrtle dear......... I think I shall have a go next Spring.... I am always too scaredy to eat picked mushrooms...I am just the sort of person who would inadvertently poison her entire family sadly....besides having watched Hugh Fearnly Whittingthingy on a regular basis I am not capable of running through the woods at speed slinging mushrooms into a stylish basket..bad hip, you know....

Do you think you could train Toby dog to sniff out the OK ones - or maybe a truffle or two 4P? A good idea in theory The witch but this is the dog who jumps over crouching pheasants without seeing them and has been known to chase a squirrel up a tree and stand patiently at the foot of the wrong one while the squirrel laughs at him from nearby.....lots of character but not blessed with brains or concentration.

Is he a labrador by any chance? Black labrador crossed with a springer spaniel - beautiful but silly... lovely though.

Thank you, I will send for one - something to read during the dark winter nights. Translated by hubby - not another catalogue! I have enough trouble spotting mushrooms when walking - how do they do it when running?

They cheat! All the mushies are marked with little flags which are removed just before Hugh FW (and the camera) get there. It's the only explanation.
