Finally got a chance to look at the new T&M veggie catalogue which dropped through the door the other day. Since I will have a bigger vegetable garden next year (hopefully) I might grow some maincrop spuds for a change. Any recommendations please? I liked the Charlotte second earlies I grew this year very much and I see there is a cross with them and Pink Fir Apples called Harlequin for an early maincropper - I might try them. Which ones has everyone else grown please?

Hi 4pygmies, this season I trialed a new Potato for Thompson & Morgan called SARPO MIRA it was excellent and was not effected by the blight at all. I will be growing this next year myself, it was excellent for Roast Potatoes and nice pest free tubers, regards Steve.

Thanks Steve! That was, coincidentally, the next question! They've talked a lot in the Organic Gardening magazine about Sarpo potatoes. I didn't get blight this year but no doubt it's only a question of time... I am VERY bad at getting things done at the right time of year so I tend to leave my spuds in the ground a bit too long...I thought I might as well go with it and plant maincrops this time! I was pleased that the Charlotte's tasted so nice despite the fact that I only dug the last few rows last month -ahem - meant to be second earlies... ;D I am clearing a fairly sizable piece of ground over the winter (if my OH cuts the hedge down for me....) to extend the vegetable garden - I feel soo guilty that I don't use enough of my garden for food growing every year - so this is the year I start doing it right! (Besides we are hopefully holding an Early Summer camping trip here so I must start now getting the garden looking even vaguely reasonable....)

I've got a coupe of seed taters in a huge pot in the GH...they've put out shoots and I'm busy earthing them up but the top leaves of one of them looks a bit manky...do you think it's the dreaded blight? or just that it's been quite cold of late...help?

I popped to my very local, very cheap nursery this morning to get my seed potatoes. He's really good and sells at half the price of the other GC's. I got 1/2 stone each of Rocket (1st earlies), Maris Bard (also 1st earlies I think) and Picasso (maincrop) all for under £7. Which was nice. He hasn't got any Charlottes this year so I still might treat myself to some of them and I shall prolly order the Sarpo ones to try. I think I was very fortunate to stay blight free last year so I'd like to try those.

I still have some of my Pink Fir Apple potatoes left do you think if I chitted them and planted them in a different place I would be tempting fate?

No, I don't see why - they are too expensive not to reuse as seed potatoes if you can. I'm always digging potatoes up in odd places in my garden - they are sometimes better than the pricy bought seed ones!

This afternoon I've planted 3 HUGE pots with taters...still have some seed potatoes left so I'm going to have to plant up a few more pots tomorrow....(first earlies, Lady Crystl). I used good MP compost and stood the pots in trays by the back door (v sheltered)with a transparent plastic cover over them to protect them from the cold

I dont think you need to protect them from the cold Cheery, the compo should do that, you might actually create an environment for mould with your plastic. :

If you need to top it up as they grow, Cheery, a Grobag is as good as anything I think - lots of nutrients and cheaper than other composts too. A bit of fleece handy to drape over when the leaves start to show should keep frost off them
