My onions grown from sets this year were absolute rubbish. I am considering growing from seed next season, something I haven't done before
I would appreciate any advice re varieties, time to sow, growing conditions etc

Seeds are even less reliable and a lot more difficult but you can sow japanese onions in late summer for overwintering They usually come disease free unlike sets which can be tainted on purchase. Its been a poor year for onions Dr Bill are you sure you want to do it this way next year?

If I remember correctly it is traditional to sow onion seed on Christmas Day, or is it New Years Day.

If you can afford a heated, lighted greenhouse yes! Otherwise its late summer/Autumn or spring ;D
