Im on the lookout for a suitable bottle for next year, the pear trees on the lottie didnt flower this year, as they had only recently been planted. I reckon a stocking would make a good support for the bottle, Im definitely going to try this.

I wish I had a pear tree, as I think I would have a go at that! I suppose it is a bit like those cucumber trainers to make them grow straight! Pity my FIL isn't still alive, he would love the brandy!

I wouldn't be able to do that with my mighty pear tree - I'd have to use a demijohn or similar! Have you ever made a rumpot, The witch? I used to do those sorts of things in my previous life. They are really scrummy and the resulting liqueur is fantastic (although incredibly potent). Now's the time to start one......celebrate your first Christmas in your new home with it? You'd be VERY popular with your neighbours if you dished that out...

Yes - we used to make it every Christmas when we lived in Germany as buying Pott Rum was easy and cheap there - I use the Rumpot jar to keep my seeds in now.

According to the article in the telegraph they suggest using an old decanter bought from a charity shop for pears such as Doyenne du Comice or try www.saverglass.com

I'll look out for a bottle and ask my nan if I can have a go useing her william pear tree, she's a bit odd and set in her ways, and may not be able to sleep at night if she knew there was a bottle in her pear tree! It'll be a few years before my baby pear trees start to fruit. Does anyone have any idea how long it takes both trees are about 5 ft

If they are flowering in Spring you should start to get some fruit set over the next year Emsey. My pear trees are all only about 10 - 12 ft tall after 15 years and are all loaded with fruit every year now.

The one in the BG has some blossom this spring, which louis pesented to me, he pulled the whole branch off little £$%&^" Hope to get some next year at home then! We planted the spindley one in the BG when Holly was born in 02. The one at the lottie is bigger and must have had a better start being from a GC and not woolies.
