On my old allotment some years ago we had a carrot thief. Would only take carrots -nothing else.

If it is be very careful - from all reports he is a tricky chap, very devious! What ever you do don't put shotgun barrels down rabbit holes. He will either reroute them out of another hole and you end up shooting yourself, or he with tie a knot in the end of the barrel, or plug up the holes, and it will blow up in your face! Avoid bombs and cliff edges too!

Pulled our first beetroot yesterday!! We're so proud! It's about the size of a golf ball, I'll let you know how it tastes later! Everything is doing great, We've found a slug pellet that can be used which is organic and it doesn't kill the birds or toads if they eat the poisoned slugs! All the lettuces are going full steam ahead, we've also planted our 3 sisters bed, planted turnip seeds (no we don't have sheep!!), the strawberries are also in, and more peas too so we have been really busy bunnies!! I'll post some more pics later!

hi, ali Deb hasn't used her beet yet but i peel mine (was so happy it looked like a real beetroot you buy in a shop!) and grated it into a salad and also used some of the less manky leaves in the salad too they were lovely, very spinichy. we've filled the origonal plot now and have got a number of fruit shrubs strawberrys and peas and mini sweetcorn, not to mention apple and pear tree on plot two. The beans will soon be ready and we want to try and get some flower beds on the go. still loving every minute spent at the plots.

We braved the manky weather this morning, we were on the plot before nine! Did some serious weeding, about 6 barrow loads, need to do a lot more though!
We had three out of the five carrots, the other 2 are not ready yet, two of them had forked. although they tasted lovely. we also had some more broad beans, spinach, spicy salad, We also had some rhubarb, we've put the leaves in a bucket to rot to make that stuff cabbage whites hate. There has also been somebody theiving around the other plots, somebody has had a load of spuds nicked, and our garlic has disapeared!!

We need better fences there the ones that run around the back are broken down, they need to be beefed up. How do we persuade the council to spend the money?

we need some barbed or razor wire on top of the fences, the other side has got it and they're left alone!

I can't believe it! There are some really low people in the world are there not? Utter scumbags, the lot of them! I think you should start to bombard the relevant dept of your local council with letters. And keep on at them - what are your lottie committee doing about it too?

Nothing as usual! They are there to serve themselves, as the plots are divided on two sides of the road, plot A (left hand side) has all the committee members, plot B right hand side, poor relations, (thats us!)All the chippings got diverted to their side in a sneaky fashion, remember? I think its time we started our own committee, and look after our interests properly.

There you are then! That's your task while you're immobile. Plot a coup and /or start a rebel committee. I think you'd be great as chief negotiator and wheedler with the council rep! I'd love it if you ended up with the best equipment, fencing, etc AND a club house on your side! Is there any power laid on? There must be grants and stuff available from somewhere to help you.........go do a bit of detecting......roam the internet in search of funding.......do your duty, Colonel Sweetleaf! (salutes snappily, walks off leaving Col.SL aand her black labrador braced for action...stirring music fades as she straightens her back - carefully - and sets her lips in stern resolution)
