My chickens have taken a fancy to the trunk of our tree fern, they keep pecking at it. The fern doesn't seem bothered by it at the moment but if they overdo it could it be affected or won't it matter? They are also interested in the stump of the Gunnera! They were having such a go at it the other day that I put a flower pot over it. Bad move, when I took the pot off a few days later it was going 'fluffy', therefore the pot stays off from now on. I doubt if they could damage it, what do you think? I doubt if either plant will be damaged by them, and they do leave the Gunnera stump alone now, but they're still overinterested in the Tree Fern. : Luckily our garden's made up of a courtyard which leads into the garden and I can shut the gates and keep the chickens out, which I'm doing quite a lot atm so the bulbs'll stand a chance, but they will congregate under the fern when they're allowed back in.

I don't really know about the how the fern will cope with the hen damage, they are hardy tho arn't they. I can sympathize, I keep saying never again when I let the hens onto the garden. Sunday I dropped the bowl of scraps on the decking by accident, instead of cleaning it up I let the hens out to eat it up. Loads more bulbs up and a cyclamen : We love them really. ;D

I used to put out the rice saucepan for them, they'd peck it clean - but they've gone off rice a bit atm, I think they're sick of the sight of it.

Could you put some pepper around them as a deterrent?
