After commenting on Bigs thread earlier, hope you didn't mind Cheery, it got me thinking when I went out to the shed, to put some pots that I had cleaned, away.

So I've just done a little Google and came up with various sites like this one..

What fertiliser/s do you use around the garden and the house?

I used to use Blood Fish and Bonemeal, until I heard that it's not 100% organic, as 'something' inorganic is added to it. I had used it for years, after first using Growmore, until I tried organic ways. I now use Bonemeal for planting plants and then Pelleted Chicken Manure during the growing season, on choice plants, not everyone. If I'm planting a plant in the growing season, it gets the pellets as well as the Bonemeal. I also use a seaweed extract on most things and organic Potash fertiliser for me tomatoes and hanging baskets. The plants get my aquarium water too, as that is high in Nitrates and Phosphates. Lots of my hungrier plants, Banana, Gunnera, etc. get a good mulch of well rotted manure in the spring, alongwith the chicken pellets. My soil is Clay, so holds onto nutrients quite well. In the house I use Phostrogen on most things. I have a African Violet fertiliser, that goes on my African Violets (never!) and my Streptocarpus plants. Whether I need to, I don't know, but it's more through habit now than anything else. I then have Orchid fertiliser for, guess what, our orchids! Quite a collection, really! I don't go overboard with them either, as you can do harm to plants, by overfeeding as well as underfeeding.

Well I have a virtually endless supply of pygmy goat muck so I don't tend to buy anything else...I don't think you can beat animal muck for enriching the soil. I mulch with it all over the garden - under fruit trees, in the PT and on selected areas of the vegetable garden every Autumn. Occasionally I delve into the area I use as a bonfire (only burn stuff like tree trimmings and cardboard rubbish sometimes) and I have, in the past, sieved that and dug it into my vegetabl garden soil too. I rarely have time now. And I have made Comfry liquid to use as a spray and liquid feed on accasion too. Tbh, I don't even think about fertilisers apart from that....I did have some seaweed feed for my houseplant and potted outdoor plantss but usually I top dress them in the Spring or replant instead these days.

We have a very light sandy soil, so each year we dig in large quantities of Ollies which is basically sheep dags that have been heated up to prevent weeds etc. coming with them. The Ollies breaks down slowly, so there is no danger of over feeding and it's 100% natural. We also use Phostrogen on plants like our Pelargoniums and the tomatoes will get a good dose too. We also have heaps of compost made from all our clippings, food scraps etc., which we mix with our Ollies.

BTW the Ollies comes in 20Kg bags and is delivered to my door free because I look after their computers. I usually get six bags a year.

Horse manure collected from local stable and put into plastic dustbins for a year or so plus grass cuttings etc.

Growmore on the veg plot plus various Chempak feeds for the veg.

cacti get weak chempak 8 (low nitrogen) or weak tomato feed and a capful of white vinegar to 2 gallons of tapwater.

Tomato feed for tomatoes in season.

Orchid feed for my couple of Orchids.

I use pelleted chicken manure in the garden. Also well rotted manure. I add fresh manure to the compost bins to get them 'cooking' (daughter has a horse) ;D . Slow release pellets in hanging baskets and tubs. Tomato feed. Bonemeal when planting. Baby Bio for houseplants and Orchid feed for the Orchids. I usually have a liquid feed around, Chempak or Phostrogen that I use occasionally. I have a liquid Ericaceous feed and a powder (Sulphate of Iron I think) that I fork in around the Camellia.

if anyone is in the birmingham area .i have lots of horse manure for free also wood ash .all for free.as much as you want.........well rotted and fresh........fishermans dream full of worms......the chickens love it...

Where in B'ham are you ? My husband works in B'ham - Sheldon.

Would love to get some if I can and the wood ash. And as Maggy has pointed out we have a new allotment.
