They were small, but perfectly formed, and very delicious, my brother complimented me on them, so they must be good, I only dug one plant up, to see what was happening, and got enough to feed five, for one meal.

Small but perfectly formed - just like yourself SL Just walked up to the plot at lunchtime. All those seeds that I sowed at the end of May - sod all germination. Very depressing. It can't think that it's me as I used the same techniques that I have always used but it is a new seed supplier this year - Simpsons seeds. They are excellent for tomatoes and peppers which they specialise in so I thought I would order all my veg from them. But then their leeks came up in their thousands. Not sure if I have enough enthusiasm to resow. And not a lot of available time either.

Plug plants then, if you can get them now? Sowing only takes a few minutes Mick, dont lose heart.

They were mostly root stuff - beetroots and carrots but also broccoli and Romanesco caulis.
I only have Saturday available and todays forecast for Saturday is lousy.

Well, just been up to the allotment again to try to be more objective. Results:-
Potatoes and onions OK Parsnips coming on Carrots, beetroot and spinach sparse and looking unwilling to grow. Spring onions unwilling to grow Leeks fine 2 out of 3 courgettes coming on OK Toms and peppers OK. Sweet Corn germinated a little sparsely but coming on. French beans sparse and slow.
I picked some mixed leaves which are fine and also the first broad beans but only the early flowers have been pollinated so crop is small. That's rather worrrying. I once saw an article which suggested leaving flowering weeds around Broad Beans to attract mor insects for pollination. The second sowing of Broad Beans is in flower so we shall see.
There is no doubt that being so exposed on the top of a hill is a problem I can't really solve. Plots lower down generally look better.

The thought of that gave me nightmares! I took more pics of the veggie end Ill try to get those on this evening after Ive eaten, somehow Im not hungry, but Ill have to do something soon. OH popped in a while ago and straight back out again so I havent a clue what, or when, we`ll eat. Better go and see . See you later Ali

Even though I am not keeping my allotment next year I have come to the conclusion after 3 years that it is a late sumer and winter allotment. All the early stuff like parsnips, broad beans, carrots etc. etc. are poor. Potatoes aren't great either but courgettes, Toms, sweet corn, leeks, broccoli, cauli all grow well and are doing well again this year. Mixed leaves all do well too.

[/url] I went to the Lottie yesterday and its shameful.... the weeds were as high as an Elephants eye The weather and my dratted back have ruined this season for me. OH helped me by digging a couple of rows of spuds up but all I managed was picking peas Mange Tout and Broad beans, and a lovely bunch of sweet peas, I have them near me now and they smell great. Today I harvested the last of the broad beans which will be eaten the rest have been left to mature for seed. I also harvested Potatoes Mange Tout Carrots and Parsnip thinnings and weeded as much as I could. I sorted out the Strawberry beds , and pegged down loads of runners, and ate fruit straight from the bushes as I went I left a pile of weeds almost as tall as me on the path when I left, and loads of spud Halms in the Barrow, must go back tomorrow now, and sort that out.

That cold wet weather that we had for a week completely did for my courgettes.
However, not a bad crop of Pink Fir Apple potatoes. It's touch and go whether the sweet corn makes it but if September is OK they should ripen sufficiently.
Dug up the few multi coloured carrots that germinated - every shade from purple to white.
That leaves tomatoes to ripen as well and parsnips and leeks for the winter.
