That cold wet weather that we had for a week completely did for my courgettes. However, not a bad crop of Pink Fir Apple potatoes. It's touch and go whether the sweet corn makes it but if September is OK they should ripen sufficiently. Dug up the few multi coloured carrots that germinated - every shade from purple to white. That leaves tomatoes to ripen as well and parsnips and leeks for the winter. I lost all my pumpkins and only have one plant left in the squash bed, its a courgette called Tromboncino. Its threatening to take over the whole bed though, so its not all bad. Pink fir apple spuds were very good this year, and the Parsnips look set to be a very good crop.

sorry to hear about your pumpkins sweetie, we lost one (so far) last week, it was a bit larger than a tennis ball and something had eaten 1/2 of it prolly the rats that have been eating your sweetcorn.

Just walked up to my plot. Seriously warm there and I was very surprised to find the courgettes producing again plus some nice big tomatoes - Caro Rich.
If the weather holds the sweet corn will just make it.

The parsnips are still doing well. Ive cleared the beds around them to start building the new raised beds. The last pic is of the courgette bed (thats just one plant, and it has come through the fence behind it to invade the rest of the plot.)

I cleared out the sweetcorn plants, last night and today, the rats had begun to harvest them for me ! I reported the rat problem to the Manager, he will get something done he said. Bob (a plotholder two plots from me) had the same thing going on, so I encouraged him to pick what he had left too, no need to feed them deliberately is there?

Let them find some other hard working human to feed them then! 4P might be benevolent to them. Can you trap them humanely and send them to her place? They can make friends with the ones she already has. That'd be nice, eh?

Humph! OGL will have something to say about that! Your plot looks fantastic Sweetie. A real tribute to you and your hard work. If you start an online petition - I'll be the first to sign it. How shocking that it might be turned into houses......I think this might be our first Autumn Fruits Campaign.....gird your loins, gal, and see if anyone else on the net is fighting the same battle!

Why thank you, Ill bear that idea in mind, babe we could do with something in the local papers too. I think the plots should host something for the local community, something in the daytime at the week end, thinking caps on. : I had a look what it meant and now I know ......my loins are girded!

I cleared the very last of the couch grass and weeds from my plot 1 today, picked runner beans and courgettes, and raspberries Jostaberries etc (not many of each but enough for a snack)I did intend to share them and I would have enjoyed doing so, but I passed the pot to OH to hold while I locked the shed and when I turned back he had eaten the lot! I weeded a flower bed on plot 2 also but the time was getting on, and I had to quit because the biting insects were out for supper, and making a meal of me, so I will continue that tomorrow. Its a relief to be able to concentrate now on Plot 2, knowing plot 1 is under control, the bad back I suffered this year having put paid to my efforts for an extended period. All my compost heaps are brimming now, (3 of them, plus two leaf bins), and a new one is planned to go beside them, as I do have room for it. The compost they produced this year was very good and went a long way towards filling up the raised beds. Im still picking Sweet Peas, although they are coming to a close now, and I think my neighbours will only get a couple more bunches out of them, my ladies do love them though, and its worthwhile knocking the door with them for the look on their faces, I hide behind the flowers and call "interflora" They like my runner beans and courgettes too, so they dont go to waste. All in all Im happier about my plots than I was, long may it continue.

I planted up my Brassica bed today with Club root resistant Cabbage plants Kilaxy Kilaton and Clapton (cauli) I netted the whole lot against pigeons and put down Growing success organic slug pellets, if it all fails now Ive done my best. With bobs help I got the other plot covered with tarps and put weights on it to hold it down and I began to tidy the compost heap end of plot 2 it was a bigger job than can be finished in one day though and I was a bit freaked out by an over familiar new plot holder, so I did a runner at that point!

Well done SL I planted my spring cabbage yesterday....only12 plants. Dunno if they're club root resistant or not! but as I've never grown anything in that space I'm hoping they'll be OK.

They should be Cheery!...... although Club root spores can survive over 20 years in the soil, in a house garden theres little chance they would have been introduced in the first place.

I did the last bit of tidying today, and was pleased to see that the onion sets have rooted well with the netting to keep the birds from pulling them up in search of whatever is beneath, and the runner beans are STILL producing. I was going to leave them for a bit to collect seed but there are new beans on there which arent in the least bit stringy in November thats unheard of. The courgettes are gone to the great compost bin (on plot 2) There are five bays there, covered in a large plastic sheet, with a resident Slow worm and what looks like eggs in the middle of it! When I saw them, I stopped turning the heap and covered them back up... I hope the slow worm doesnt abandon the nest now because I disturbed it. I only had an hour to spare for the plot today, hope to go back at some point tomorrow.

I have a good crop of leeks and some parsnips for winter.
Then that's it but I will be turning the 2 lawns at the bottom of the garden (where the badger is now) into the new veg area.

Got drowned yesterday lifting those leeks and parsnips. Parsnips have a fair bit of canker I'm afraid.

Same here - we've still got loads to clear but it's amazing how quickly you can get through it. I've bought everyone wellies so there's no excuse, although the girls and OH are very keen, William is doing his best to wriggle out of it, new wellies or not! We've got lots of heaps of dead brambles which are going to go up a treat when we set light to them. The exhaust I found in the brambles - if I plant it will I grow a car?
