I think you're right - I'll look up symptoms of Vine Weevil first though.

I looked up Vine Weevil symptoms and it looks very much the case - the poor old Barnsley got binned last night. I hated doing it but it was never going to flourish. As for the Tree Mallow, it's looking very sorry for itself too. It's like a doughnut - lovely round the outside but a big hole in the middle! It's TEEMING with snails - they couldn't be the problem could they? They would just strip it to pieces first wouldn't they, and not cause all the browning or wilting? Pairs of snails residing in several of the flowers - yuk. I'm going to take some cuttings from the healthy bits and dig the rest of it up and throw it away. The RHS Encyclopadiea suggests this as , as we all know, Lavatera can be somewhat 'short-lived'.

Yesterday we chopped the whole thing down. I'm not going to take any cuttings from it since, beautiful as it is, it just goes too mental in all directions. It was seething with snails too. It's left a nice space there for something else now.......

Thats the ticket! You know, there are no gardening disasters, just new planting opportunities

What a nice thought, that's really kind of you, 4P, but we decided not to take any cuttings from it, we still have a Burgundy Wine and Lilac Lady Lavatera and as much as we love the Tree Mallow it's just too big for the garden - I've still got several large-growing shrubs in pots waiting to be rehomed out in the garden, there's no point in putting those out until the chickens are here, or they'll just get munched again. Maybe one day when the children have had enough of the swings and we can take them away, maybe then there'll be room for one, but THANKS again!
