I think that maybe years of leaf droppings do that to sandy soil - there aren't any rhodies round here - shame. They are lovely.

Spotted another one courtesy of Dr D G Hessayon - Bladder Senna or Colutea which 'thrive in sun and poor sandy soil'. Also says 'The main fearture is the appearance of the inflated seed pods...and generations of children have loved to pop them!' Which all sounds lovely but I have visions of a very bare poor old plant with nothing left on it......
