I thought I'd share this with you so you are all forewarned! This morning I have been trying to remove a hedge I planted about 15 years ago...I covered the ground all around each plant with that weed suppressing fabric a few years ago and then laid a thick mulch of bark on top. Well, this morning when I pulled it all up - guess what I found underneath? Stacks and stacks of bloomin' slugs eggs........there were thousands of them I should think.........so that's not a very good idea then......plus it didn't suppress any weeds! In fact the nettle roots took very kindly to a nice soft medium to spread about it.. Shan't be using it again.....

I don't like weed surpressing mats and I'm not surprised that you found millions of slugs eggs. it must have been a marathon task to finish the entire job though 4P - well done you!

I'm afraid I am nowhere near finishing the job Plocket! I just pulled out all the fabric and tackled some of the nettle roots. Then I had a go at pickaxing the first big shrub's roots but it nearly did for me! So I spent the day weeding and clearing up the rest of the veggie garden.....it's still a mess but at least you can see the layout now.....

Gordon Bennett 4P you'll have muscles like Arnie by the time you've finished! I know what you are going through though because mum and dad (and us) slowly removed about 200 leylandii trees from around their garden. They were lucky though that they had a friend with a tractor who'd come round and remove the stumps and roots. Good luck 4P

Good luck 4P Thanks darling Plocket! 200 leylandii sounds like a nightmare prospect and puts my 4/5 big shrubs into perspective although I must admit that after my struggle with the rose and the subsequent pain all week - I'm not looking forward to it....me and my stupid ideas! I'm thinking of asking my sister if her horse could earn his keep and pull them out - he's a big Welsh Cobb and has never done anything but eat grass.....

I mentioned this to someone on the Beeb boards some time ago and they replied, ooh hadn't thought of that, good point. In it's right place it's OK, like under a gravel path, but it seems like all the garden designers are using it in every garden these days and we wonder why birds need to be fed in summer! Keith
