At lunchtime today I went to the nearest garden centre to my new office - Notcutts at Horningsea.
Rather disappointing. My heart sank immediately when I was forced straight into an enormous Xmas display area and it didn't get much better after that. The problem with many Garden Centres is that the garden bit seems a bit of an add-on with clothes, pets, toys, ornaments, books etc.etc. dominating. The layout was strange with seeds for example tucked in an alcove in the middle of clothes area.
Not much choice of composts, an unimaginitive display of pots, too many plants that had seen their best and should have been dumped etc.
The only bright spot was that in the books and CD area I was able to get an excellent compilation CD of the Andrews Sisters for £2.99.

Where did my reply go? 27 tracks Sleepy. An excellent version of Lullaby of Broadway. It seems to be just below the sentence 'Where did my reply go?' Mick.

Maybe it'll be better after christmas when they get their floor space back Mick? If people keep buying the clothing, books and Cd's, they'll keep stocking them Mick : mind you I never could resist a bargain. ;D

It was really poor. Poor quality, poor layout.

Christmas starts far to early - I feel sorry for all the children that think it's not far off! Should be banned until December 1st. (bah humbug).

OOH, A Christmas rant - let's start early shall we? ;D I hate my local (independant) GC at this time of year - everything is shunted round to make a massive Christmas tat area but there are also fireworks, Halloween, clothes, books, lots of gifts, games, summer furniture and maybe a few bulbs, seeds and garden bits and pieces. The covered plant area starts filling up with disgusting things like dyed heathers and ornamental cabbages and the outdoor plant area (which is usually good) gets all filled up with huge shrubs and incredibly overpriced 'smart' plants. You have to hunt for everything and the garden equipment is shoved in a corner. The pet section is full to the gills with doggy presents and posh bedding for pooches etc etc...the only good thing is that they do have a very good selection of wild bird and animal food and kit....I don't blame them for trying to make money but it's an awful sight in there...

I must admit last year's very early Christmas display at our local Goulds was fantastic - a red section here, a green one there, enormous!! VERY impressive but I do agree that Christmas shoves everything else on the backburner - two of my children's birthdays are in November and the selection of birthday cakes, cards etc goes right down to a minimum to make room for the Christmas stuff.

And trying to book a normal party venue isn't easy either as the Christmas parties spill back into November - that's got to be wrong hasn't it?

There's a bewildering array of all kinds of stuff for all kinds of occasions - the promise of all these occasions to come is great but it can get a bit much can't it?

Spot on 4P. I'd forgotten about the dyed Heathers. Every bloody colour of the rainbow - absolutely awful. They are up there wiith cacti that have false flowers pinned or glued on. Bah humbug again.
