What an interesting thread!
Because we have a semi-tropical climate, we grow a lot of avocados commercially.
My customers frequently give us their seconds, so we don't need to grow a tree of our own.
In fact a seed left in the ground here will sprout and quickly produce a tree over 40ft high which is just too big for our section!
Your method of propogating them works really well and I have often seen it done.

I haven't killed my avocado plant - yet! Despite it being outside for over 2 weeks and being frosted several times - it's still alright...I can't believe it - I've committed Planticide but my victim won't die.......

We have been known to take the top off a carrot and put it in a saucer of water just to watch the result.

The root is about 3 inches long now, but there's no sign of a green shoot from the top of the stone yet. Bought another avocado yesterday, which I will root too, as I've read that 2 plants are needed for pollination. (She says knowing full well that the chances of harvesting my own avocados is just a dream). Best of luck though The witch! ;D
