Does anyone know what this is please? I bought it from the bargain shelf and thought it was some kind of Musa - it did look identical to one of my other banana plants but this one is flowering now and the leaves are changing colour.

I did think it was one of these - come to think of it, can anyone tell me the name of this one? It's not a Musa Basjoo, all I can remember from the label is that it's a Musa Something.....I keep all my labels but lost this particular one e.

It's not a Canna is it? When we were at a G/C at the weekend my eldest said look Dad there are lots of banana plants like the one we have just bought. No son, they are Cannas, they do look similar though!

I've just looked up Canna in my plant encyclopaedia Keith, and I think you're right! The flowers and leaves are very Canna-like. Well I never! This is my first Canna. I don't know how much they cost in the GC you went to but I think I bought this one for 3 pounds on the bargain shelf. I'm really pleased, thanks Keith!

I didn't check the price, but I think they would be more than £3, for sure. That's a bargain, well done! I must admit to thinking of them myself,, but thought I ought to get that part of the garden dug over first!!

Yes its a Canna for sure. Mine has just started to come back after I thought I had lost it, it was too heavy to move. Mine was about £3 too but I bought it as a small lump of nothing wrapped up in plastic and wood shavings. Its in a barrel atm, the roots become massive! The plant was 6ft tall last year before it died back!

Couldn't you have lifted them in the autumn and potted them up and put into the greenhouse? We have not had a bad winter so maybe you were lucky this time. Oops sorry your skill got it though the winter!!! Keith

It's lovely Sweetleaf ! I bet you were happy when you realized it was still alive Six feet? Mine's a baby then. Thanks for the thread The witch - there are LOADS of different Cannas on there! It'll take a while to go through them all, but I'll really enjoy it.

I was very happy! I love it when a plan(t) comes together But yours is way in front of mine! Mine must be weird though...... they describe it as semi-dwarf which mine certainly wasnt last year, but it was potted into a mix of well rotted manure and JI no3 so maybe I overfed it?

It sounds like it appreciated it, regardless! One of the Cannas with flowers like mine on The witch's thread was called Canna William Shatner - isn't that a brilliant name?

Cant sleep! I dont think its a ginger plant! Sorry Maggyd, the flowers are totally different and its not easy to get them to flower at all in this country, on the other hand they make great foliage house plants and you can grow them from shop bought ginger roots.
