My nan is driving us all mad with her apple and pear tree's she cant stand to see even one on the ground, and she's got a 'thing' about the apples filling up her bin, so she'll take bag full to the public bin! She'll be even worse when the leaves start falling! I worry about her falling as she's 82. I know its bad if she stops getting the leaves up!

Why dont you pick them for her? Then they wont fall, and you can surely find someone on freecycle who wants to use them?

I suppose I could. There ain't many left now but I could do that next year, the thing is she wont wait till they are ready she's out there shaking the tree like a naughty imp, (she gets smaller every year bless her) My uncle goes and does her garden every wed and the poor man id at the end of his tether! She is so set in her ways! Funny quirky little habits you wouldn't believe, still she's always been good to me and I can handle her better than most.

Hope none of the fruit falling'll land on her!!! My OH's nan was in her eighties, and small and frail-looking and somebody thought she would be easy to burgle - they broke into her house and the next thing they knew there was an axe whistling past their earhole which buried itself in the doorframe behind them. She threw it straight at them from the top of the stairs - hope the burglar decided on a different profession after that.

Just a bit! At least in those days he couldn't go and sue her for threatening behaviour.

I think these days he could have sued for the long term damage to his psyche that a quivering axe in the doorframe undoubtedly could cause, nightmares, inability to follow his trade (burglary) and loss of earnings!

Shamefully true, I would still go for the baseball bat if someone broke in though.

So would I! I know this as one night I got up to go to the loo, and unbeknown to me OH got up too and went to the downstairs loo. When I was coming back to our room I heard someone silently creaking up the stairs. Thinking OH was in bed and having no idea he'd got up I grabbed this Masai club I'd got, used for killing lions, called out, there was no reply, and was so close........thought I should check first and there was OH's face innocently appearing up the stairs, looking completely shellshocked.

"A likely story" they would have said! Good job you did check first though, it could have been tragic!

Just proves women are just as territorial as men and just as protective of their families, a force to reckon with, we are!

she's 98, she moved from florida to live near her son in chicago 2 years ago. My nans uncle stan died 6 months ago and aunt phylis died when I was expecting louis (she was a fave of mine.) Sis and myrtle both died about 10-15 years ago they were in their 90's too. My great nan was holding out for her telegraph but had a fall and broke her hip, they had to operate and she never really came round from it. She out lived two of her children.

I've been in the garden a lot this weekend I know that it may seem wasteful...but I dug out my tomato and cucumber plants...we're heartily sick of both!...the peppers went as well...I've chopped up and frozen the peppers tho (for shoving in casseroles and chili)...The only things left are the sweetcorn (these look very nibbled)...I was going to say 'and the beans' but OH decided to pull them out of their pot! (got loads frozen...as you do) Yesterday I insisted that OH used his new sat-nav to take me to two GCs in Rutland... I treated him to lunch, and we bought some Japanese onions and spring cabbage plants..YAY!...needless to say I had to rush home and plant them! Came home and emptied the GH...scrubbed down the staging...repotted my lovely GINKO in a new terracotta pot (only a little bit bigger than the one it was in..but that one had split). It's settling into it's new home with lots of baby leaves still opening. I had a look at the two clematis cuttings that Plocket had done for me..they have lots of root so I put each one in a small long tom pot and put them back in the GH.... I've been planting loads of pansies for a bit of seasonal colour...I know that they're not grand flowers but I love their little smiling faces...all in white, blue and purple... My wallflowers, bellis and sweet william seedlings needed potting up, ready to plant out next week or the week after...also pricked out some delphiniums (pacific giants and chinensis blue butterfly) and some foxgloves (candy mountain).....Also did loads of weeding and stuff....I ache all over! but it's a GOOD ache...
