As long as there are no plants overhanging the copper they will stay out. I wanted to try it but there are so many high green bits they can use to Tarzan themselfs in. Blue pellets that don't kill birds or hedgehogs is my solution.

I think I know the variety. It's those pale ones with the bright orange line.

Im thinking of re-planting the entire garden with Bog plants, if it doesnt stop raining soon its all it will be fit for. The slugs and snails love it, but I cant even walk on the grass.

Oh dear, even with the slope you have in your garden? But just wait and before you know it you'll be moaning about it being to dry again....
You might have to wait some months before it happens.
If you are going for bog plants do get a Gunnera they are such stunning plants and when it rains again later in the season you can shelter underneath it.

I'm trying to get myself in the mood for digging. I'm usually champing at the bit by now and trying to stop myself sowing seeds..not this year though. Whilst furtling about in my disgustingly messy pantry I came across my Plant sales money jar and it had some coins in it still! Quite a lot of coins in it....the joys of having no memory cells functioning you see ;D So I've ordered some plants from JParkers:
Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff Echinops Bannaticus Blue Globe Trifolium Rubens (Red Feathered Clover Eryngium planum Silverado Cirsium Rivulare Atropurpureum Echinacea Purpurea (these were free)
Now, I've heard some horror stories about JParker so I do hope they are all OK.....the above plants plus a reasonable number of various grasses I have left from the plant sales are going to form the basis of my flower garden. If I ever get it dug and weed free (ish).. I want a free flowing 'Piet Oudolf type' area......where I can sit and have a drink with OH and smallest of a summer evening....dream on ..... ;D

I hope so, thanks sugar. I picked the best value for money (IMO) as well as this represents a major outlay for me! If it would stop raining for a while I might be able to start the serious digging sometime soon.......if it goes well and OH is amenable - I would love the camping trip to happen sometime this year. I might have to have a 'bring a spade' party...... ;D

Don't expect perfect quality and that way you will be OK. Some plants have been OK, some died before they even got in the soil. Be prepared to water, plant or at least pot on plants AS SOON AS they arrive. Their catalogue is better than their plants, lets put it that way. The one thing I don't like is sometimes I might only want 1 of the plants for sale, but they only sell them in packs of three. Maybe buying three, you can be assured of at least one surviving in your garden!!! Let us know what they are like, as I still get their emails. Not ordered for about four years now. Keith

It's been a glorious day here so far. Just came in for a sandwich as I've been in the GH all morning. I tidied up, then pricked out some of the gerberas, cosmos, pepino and lobelia.. ;D
The CF is clean and airing, the GH has the door and window open...I've rootled about clearing away twigs and dead foliage from the border and I'm daydreaming what I'll spend my £50 winnings on at the nursery....
It's even nice enough outside to hang the washing out...first time I've been able to do that this year. ;D

It makes such a difference when the sun shines doesn't it? My spuds are chitting in Mum's front porch...
Cheery, I've been meaning to ask you which Gerberas you have? Pru grew some absolutely beautiful dusky pink ones last year but she can't remember which seeds they were. I can't find anything that looks remotely the right shade of pink atm....the ones I'm talking about were really an unusual subtle pink....

My cauliflowers have started to come through my sweetpeas have also come through, 1 geranium up out of 24 seeds sown, my cineraria is a now show as are my antirhinums, will have to try and sow again next week, i suppose it would help if i had a heated GH and heated propagators ;D that will be on my XMAS LIST FOR THIS YEAR. My potatoes are in the conservatory chitting nicely.

Some GCs sell Gerbera plug plants if you need a specific colour... I still have a bit of seed left you know ;D

I've never grown Gerberas : .....are they tricky? They need heat don't they? I might have a look at plugs at the GC though...it was such a lovely colour - very unusual. Summer bedding pinks tend to be a bit lurid I think....if I'm going lurid colours I'd rather be bright orange really.....you keep your seed hunny, thanks very kindly though. I have too many packets to find a home for atm - smallest is already kicking up at possibly losing her bathroom when I start sowing in earnest (poor Earnest...).

It' s been a beautiful day here today - we have both been in the garden all day - I sorted all my pots of Cannas,Lilies and Hostas out and planted my new Lily bulbs Barry dug his veg beds and put new canes and netting over them. It is time to start greenhouse no.2 up and then I can get sowing and potting on :)All the cuttings I took at the end of the summer seem o.k. - I will take lots of Fuchsia cuttings this week

I put all my Lilies into 12 " black plastic pots so that I can then put them where I want to in the borders. :)I use compost that has some john innes in it.

I dont grow many Lilies I have cats, but I love Pineapple Lilies and have just bought enough for two more pots, all I need is time to get them planted, good job the nights are getting lighter. All my Glads are going to the lottie, I picture a riot of colour on Lottie2 this year, I have bought a lot of annual seeds too, and I want to have the biggest nectar bar in the area, as early as possible in the year.

Slugs seem to be having a field day at the moment, Dutchy ... I noticed that one of my Echium's is being nibbled which is strange since they have really spiky leaves ... but at least copper tape seems to be keeping them away from the mini-GH - so far, anyway I never see any snails or slugs this early!! living in the frozen N.E must have its good points. ;D

Today I spent hours in the garden tidying up...lots of new growth coming up ;D I hacked back the passiflora a bit as it's such a thug, if I don't get itin order now it grows out amongst the flowers in the border and tries to strangle them ;D
I'm afraid I had to sow some seeds as well...oops...herbs. Dwarf white sage, thyme, 3 different basils, pot marjoram and greek oregano ...sigh.....

Well, I've sorted out the right border in the back garden - it is now 'vinca' free, derbris removed and re-shaped. It was straight, now from halfway down the garden, it has a gentle curve towards the house. Just have to buy plants to fill it ;D
