But I know that to get them to fruit they like to have their roots confined. I suspect that they don't really need feeding either. Like buddliea and elder etc I believe they prefer poor soil conditions.

I seem to remember 4P has a fig tree but I found a site that will tell you all you need to know Maggyd .http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/fig.html Sleepy is right about restricting the roots I have mine in a small pot set inside a larger pot. I visited that site earlier on but It is more about large figs trees I couldnt fidn anything about feeding. ;D

It said on my quick scan that you should completely change the soil in the pot once every three years probably it uses it up by then, you have topped up havent you? How old is the fig?

I do have a fig but that's no guarantee I know about them! I agree with Sleepy though that you must treat them on the mean side to get fruit. Mine is in a 15" (maybe) pot and I just top dress every so often (and pull out the weeds). Last year I got loads of fruit (about 11 figs I think) and just as it all ripened some ****** creature nicked every one overnight! Very lovely leaves though so I don't really mind that much.......hope yours does better, Maggyd!

Ive counted 15 figs 4Ps about 1"this week ,and last week they were just like peas so I must be really mean!! like you I have just re-topped with new compost. When I first panted it a couple or so years ago the leaves were turning yellow and looking sickly so I re-potted it into a narrow long plastic pot and put it back into the terracotta pot and it recovered.
