If I keep and cool the water that I've cooked my vegetables in, is it any good for watering on my houseplants?

That's an interesting question Plocket - I suppose it would be OK if you don't use salt in your cooking water.

I wouldnt but it would be alright outside, theres the risk of a bit of a stink if you use it indoors. I have thrown potato water on the borders etc, and its done no harm.

I don't use salt The witch but I've made a note of your comment re smells Sweetleaf - thanks both of you. I just always feel so bad just chucking the water down the drain! Perhaps I'll save that recycling idea for when it's hot and we really need the water - at the moment the garden isn't exactly gasping!!!;D

You could use the water to make gravy or reduce it with some herbs for veg stock and freeze it in an ice cube tray.....

Mmmm - I don't think I'm that desperate Sweetleaf ;D
I might just water my garden with it - I've lots of outside containers that need watering after all! ;D I already water them with the fishtank water when I clean that out!

I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be quite beneficial to use cooking water actually - it might retain some minerals and trace elements still - but it would stink in the house! Maybe in the summer when your house plants are outside for a while...my Nan always watered her plants with the cold tea from the teapot and they thrived although she was really mean to them in other ways (freezing cold in winter, dust...)!

If you chuck a lot of water then talk to your water company, a lot of water charges are for 'sewage' treatment and ypur 'chucked' water wouldn't be being treated. I believe some koi keepers get a discount/rebate because they do water changes that are presumably meant to be dumped on the garden. I doubt a water company would give you a dsicount but you never know.
