LOTS of things can be sown in September - almost all Biennials which means they flower the following year, so you miss out the long wait and a great many Perennials too - it's easiest to check on the seed catalogues info as they often tell you which prefers what. I am sowing Hollyhocks, Echinacea, Lupins, Golden Thistles and some others I can't remember at the mo. You have to have somewhere to overwinter them though , such as a cold GH or CF.. sometimes an open frame is sufficient for the tougher plants. Quite often I sow a few seeds from whatever I fancy just to give me a head start. And lots of native plants can be sown in the Autumn and left out in the winter weather as it mimics their natural conditions. Many won't germinate well without being treated mean, they need several weeks of cold to break their dormancy although sowing them freshly collected from the plants means they haven't got to that stage yet. Um, clear? If sowing seeds to overwinter I've found it best to use deeper seed trays too - old ice cream cartons are ideal (with drainage holes), or the plastic trays soft fruit is sold in. Or I use flower pots if I'm only sowing a few of each variety. I think the deeper root base sustains them better in winter.

(if they get here in time) They are protected but come from some private woodland in scotland. Dont know how long till we see a flower from seed though .
