Looks like an excellent method to me. Might give it a try next year.

Everything is already growing upside down in NZ anyways. ;D Oh yes Roan definitely worth the effort as I know of one variety which can be grown in a hanging basket. www.thompson-morgan.com/seeds1/product/515/1/ Altogether now - "There's a hole in my bucket dear Henry, dear Henry" ;D Dear Lisa, Dear Lisa, I like the sound of Tumbling Tom Red! I will have to see if they are available here! ;D

I've grown tomatoes in a hanging basket before and they have worked (the one I used this year was really too small and the plant struggled although we did have some very nice toms from it - never thought when I planted it, stupid me and it was one for baskets!) Having lost our two years running to blight, it could be worth a try - but I can already see the mess I am going to make trying to get the bucket set up!

Might be worth a go. I will try anything once, well almost anything!! I know my SiL grows tumbling ones in her wall baskets and does quite well with them.

What a neat idea! Like it says, it'll stop the critters getting to them, in my case chickens, oh, and slugs.......and several million other critters in all shapes and sizes - brilliant idea!

Today I finally got around to planting my Upside Down Tomato 1. I obtained a used paint bucket and washed it out. 2. I cut holes top and bottom. 3. I placed an old foam type mouse mat over the hole in the bottom. (Inside the bucket). 4. I filled it up with potting mix. 5. I placed a piece of foam used to wrap around a bottle from Duty Free. (I knew it would come in handy one day!) 6. I placed the lid firmly on top (Colourful Eh!) 7. I turned the bucket upside down (you can see the mat covering the hole). 8. I cut a hole in the mouse pad making two diagonal incisions, then trimming of the corners to make a hole in the centre with some give for when the plant expands. 9. I obtained a young tomato plant from the garden (it had self seeded from last year). 10. The plant in place and watered. (Like the old teapot? It's great for watering!) Now all I have to do is wait for it to grow before flipping it right side up!

Well I never, I shall follow this with interest........I still can't quite believe they don't turn up to follow the light....maybe you should keep them in the dark?

Thanks The witch & 4P I am sure they will try and turn up to follow the light, but gravity should make them grow outwards and then upwards and as they fruit they should hang down. That's the theory anyway! ;D We will see what we will see Eh!

It's two weeks since I started this project and this is how it looked this morning I noticed that flowers are forming, so decided it was time to hang it up Now to see how they do!

Looking good Roan - I'll be watching this thread with great interest. Does the variety you are growing need the side shoots removing? Yes, that's the next job! ;D

Yes, that's the next job! ;D Do you know if the bush variety can be grown upside down too? Yes, the one I am growing is a bush variety called Roma. As I understand it any similar plant can be grown in the same way. e.g. gherkins etc.

Looking good Roan - If yours is a bush variety, you shouldn't have to remove the side shoots. Thanks FC, but we do remove the laterals. If it is a bush variety you normally just leave it without removing the laterals. Is is a small tomato variety? Really don't know how it will work upside down, but I would be inclined to leave it.

I have also removed the first flowers (supposed to make for a better crop, so I am told).

Thanks The witch! Your advice, as always, is spot on! I will leave them alone from now on! ;D Oh, and already the plant has grown. When it is sunny it curls upwards to the sun and when it is cloudy it hangs straight down, now isn't that interesting!

Another week on and this is what it looks like I had to move it into a more sheltered spot because it was very windy a couple of days ago and I thought it might blow away! It is also lower now and easier to water! ;D

Our Upside Down Tomato is doing very well! Although I am a little concerned that the roots are so exposed!

I find the roots tend to grow out of the pots when they are the right way up, so yours should be OK.
