Just heard the news that Monty has had a minor stroke and is stepping down from GW...I think it's terrible news! Poor Monty. I have always liked him on GW as well as thoroughly enjoying his writing in the Observer and his books. Obviously I wish him a speedy and full recovery and hopefully a return to some sort of gardening on TV in the future.. I wonder who will be taking over....I hope they get someone new in to be the lynchpin...I'm not convinced any of the others have what it takes to be a permanent replacement for Monty.

I'm sorry he's leaving...and I'm not ready to even speculate about a replacement yet. Too sad.

Oh that is sad news Im sure he will be alright though at least they will monitor him now and prevent another bigger one. Its more common than you think I had to have a brain scan (no not to see if I had one!!) I had labrythitis for about 18months and the tablets werent working so they did a scan just to rule anything else out! and they found that I have had a mini stroke! it shows as a small white area, I cant recall anything happening and they said no I probably didnt have any symptoms! so I take a 75ml asprin to avoid any more. Which I have stopped : because I think it caused my bleed.

I hadn't heard this, so sorry, I really like Monty. Wishing him all the best. Hope they find a fitting replacement for GW.

Sad news, I've always enjoyed his programmes and his passion for gardening, a gentleman. Hopefully his gardening will become his therapy and we will see him again soon. He had such a busy year last year with filming, his garden being flooded and appendicitis, I wonder if everything just took its toll. Here's the article from the BBC, he's only 52 Sweetleaf. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7415469.stm

Agreed, very sad. However I believe he will make a full recovery - and that is what is most important.
I too find him to be one of my favourite TV presenters.

As you all say, this is sad news but no reason why he should not make a full recovery.
I'm not mad on him as a presenter but I think he is absolutely genuine.
None of the others impress me thougb to take over.
Gardeners World really need reinventing.
I know this won't be popular but I'd like to see Alan Titchmarsh back. As a gardener and presenter I think he has no equal.

Whatever they do they need a garden that looks like a garden and is linked together.

I read this on the news last night, just before I went to bed. Sad news, as I really like him as a presenter, not as much as GH, though. Do you think the 80 gardens took it out of him? There was a rumour that they were going to scrap GW entirely, can't believe that, but this could be where the rumour started. If they don't, will it still be at Berryfields and who will front it? Please not Joe, pleeeeeaaaase! Or Carol for that matter. It also needs to be the presenter's garden as well, which is why I haven't enjoyed it quite so much this time. Monty was only doing 3 hours a week and that is not enough, IMHO.

Please everyone be thoughtful when expressing their views on TV presenters here.
Some people on the BBC boards have gleefully said things that are very hurtful about people they don't really know.
Historically we haven't done that here - please choose you wording carefully so that we don't start. These are real people with real lives and real feelings - and they may come and visit our boards.

I am quite upset about this...I know it's silly as I don't even know him but he's always been a favourite TV gardener of mine. I think he is sincere, knowledeable and a passionate believer in organic gardening - just what we need on GW these days. I like his casual style too - friendly and informal but with conviction. It's a sad loss indeed...I do hope he makes an appearance every so often when he is recovered. I shall miss him. I don't mind any of the other presenters but they're not Monty are they?

I used to think Monty was posturing, his choice of clothing was odd for his age group and he was less genuine than he seemed, all that changed when I got used to him, he now seems a very nice man, his organic principles are well worth emulating and his style has relaxed to the point that he no longer seems stilted, he must have been nervous, following AT. Im sorry to see him go.

Well said Sleepy...I too get very cross when hurtful or spiteful personal remarks are made about people who are just doing their job to the best of their ability. That's one reason I rarely post on the beeb MB. There were several posters on there who delighted in being 'controversial'...it's best not to get sucked in ;D I would be GUTTED if GW was axed...I'm sure that whoever takes over will do their best....and I think that the producers do listen to their viewers opinions and try to provide what we want. (altho they can't please everybody) ...They were asked to include allotments..and when Joe actually got one the scoffing and pooh-poohing going on on some of the MBs was sooooooooo boring...I kept wanting to shout IT'S A SHOW!!!....they have to condense it...else there'd be 15 episodes showing young Joe weeding for 60 minutes.... : I loved GH with a passion (I have his autograph you know) and AT grew on me....as has Monty. I love Carol's enthusiasm and knowledge about propagation, Joe's willingness to try anything new and admit his faults (and he has a lovely back garden...whatever the papers say about his front garden...I mean talk about an invasion of privacy!) I'm rambling...it's me tablets...

It's sooo rude and insensitive isn't it? I never could understand how people had the effrontery to be so nasty and personal. I haven't a bad word to say about Monty anyway, He has integrity, passion, knowledge, he's articulate, intelligent and sensitive and a deep abiding love for plants - and is a nice bloke too. I can't think of anyone who could do the GW job as well....Dan Pearson? Matthew Wilson? I doubt if they'd want to....it'll be interesting to see who gets the job though won't it? (I hope they keep the others on 'staff' too - I think they are all strong in their own areas of expertise).
