I dug up my Magnolia Stellata last November and potted it up, from advice given to me. This spring it tried to flower, but got caught by frost. It hasn't come into leaf yet, is that a bad sign, never had one before, but now it has some of the branches like this. Any ideas if it is good or bad? I have scraped the branches and they are still green underneath. The 'bits' shown, just rub off and as I am useless, when it comes to diseases, I need help. Is my magnolia a goner?

Have to confess I have never seen one with red bobbles on the stems like that before. It should be in leaf now, though if the stems are still green, all you can do is wait and see.

Our Contorted Hazel has red bits on like that, It hasn't seemed to affect the leaves or catkins. They kind of "pop" off with like a white powder underneath don't they?

I've never seen that before! My Magnolia bought late last year is in full leaf, no flowers but I didn't expect any. I would just wait to see what happens. I even looked in my RHS P&D book, nothing like that re Magnolia listed.

They do, so I thought it was some sort of insect pest, just not sure. The witch, I used JI Ericaaceous compost. Thanks OB, gives me a bit of confidence. As I lost quite a bit of root, though I did prune it a bit at the time, is it worth pruning it a bit more, in case the top growth is suffering with less root than it should? Thanks for checking your book FC.

Thanks 4P, will remove the rest of them, then. Does look like that doesn't it?

Sorry, thought I had posted about scale insect. You do need to remove them asap. I would only prune off anything which is definitely dead. We have lost three Magnolias this winter by the way and none of them were moved, they just have gone, no green growth at all on them.
