Missed it, but have HD set up for everyone this week. Think I might have recorded this mornings as well by accident!! Will watch it later. I normally record Bargain Hunt 12.15-1pm, so should have it. Was last nights any good? Did you see any more of Rachael's show garden? Good thread btw!

I enjoyed it but I am seeing it with different eyes this time, busy trying to see what everyone's doing as they prepare! I always find the 'celebrity' bits irksome but I like that's Wesley Wotisname's items about foreign contributors really interesting background - what a lovely job he's got...... RdT was on very briefly, Joe Swift said she had had problems with the plant delivery so was running very late. The gardens looked very interesting this year - apparently 'green' is the predominant colour...but I thought it usually was in a garden anyway! So far so good I thought....but who the hell is that Nikki Chapman lady? Why is she commentating on Chelsea? And why does she talk in that odd nasal drone?

I enjoyed last nights programme, I liked the piece on the Japanese Orchid grower. I'm not sure that he should have had orange and pink next to each other if that was the final display. Also the Italian lady who is back after 11 years (can't remember her name). The other gardens looked good. I went a few years ago, the year Diarmuid did the 'Lollipop' garden, alot of the gardens that year were a bit OTT imo. Looking foward to more coverage of this years show.

Just a slight whinge this morning....we had visitors just as the Chelsea coverage started last night so I had to turn the sound down, I kept the picture on though so I could at least see the plants ;D But everytime I looked there seemed to be a grinning 'celebrity' mouthing off about nothing much. I mean WHO CARES what they think? I want to see the gardens and plants! Why do the Beeb continue to allow these non entities camera time, most of them are exceedingly dull and most of them aren't gardeners anyway? I wish the whole circus of them would eat themselves and let us get on with the serious business.

Just heard that Tom Stuart-Smith has won the Best in Show. I'm not really interested in that side of it but I'm pleased about that particular award as he's one of my favourite garden designers. His gardens are very beautiful and always full of plants. www.bbc.co.uk/chelsea/show_gardens/laurent.shtml

I know you need some hard landscaping, but not to the detriment of the plants. This is something I am losing my faith in with Chelsea.

Unfortunately the fashionistas have taken over Gardening and Garden Design as well as everything else - that a plant can be fashionable is a very odd idea I think. I suppose garden styles have always reflected their times though, to some degree. And there are lots of issues about the eco - ness of all of these big shows now, aren't there? As The witch says, the ethics of forcing plants, transporting them thousands of miles, all the fuel, materials and power etc that is used plus all the stuff about whether gardening should be turned into just another consumer activity......and much more. Interesting isn't it? Not that the Chelsea coverage on the Beeb reflects much of that side of it...

Yesterday evening I pressed the red button to watch coverage of the marquee but it was being covered by, yes, you've guessed it Carol Klein. I know she means well but her voice bores me to tears. After 10 minutes I fell fast asleep.
Cacti and succulents only get about 10 seconds anyway.....

I know....she's a very nice lady and very knowledgeable but........ : I watched the lunchtime coverage for the first time today. Never again, it's awful.........although they did show a cacti stand and recommend people to try growing them Mick! (20 seconds this time)

I get a bit fed up with the celebs declaring that they'd 'like to design a garden for Chelsea next year'... : What sort of a world do we live in? where somebody who is occasionally on telly gets the go ahead (and the backing) to design a GARDEN!?....makes my blood boil it do. I liked a lot of the gardens featured last night on the tv...although these days there seem to be a lot of 'tableau' gardens...a moment caught in time etc...I know that it's all very clever...(altho I did like the Japanese artist's garden)...but sometimes it all gets too silly for words.

I'm not keen on Chelsea tbh I don't like the way they force plants into flower early or hold them back from flowering until Chelsea! The witch I have a Phalalaeopsis and a few Cymbidiums, but I am not an Orchid grower, I dabble with allsorts ;D I caught part of last nights programme, can't say I was very impressed. I like a bit of colour in the garden and the show seems to be more people orientated than showing the plants :-( When I visited a few yers ago I enjoyed the experience, but the crowds and being unable to get where you want to go would stop me going again I think.

I don't do Chelsea now. The site is too small, it's absolutely packed and uncomfortable. Far too many crowds to see much at all. Not my idea of a gardening show.
Hampton Court is infinitely better and much more civilised.

Maybe it's me getting less pernickety but I do think the Chelsea coverage has been much better this year. Tonight's programme was quite interesting - I did like the Hosta man , someone with a bit of personality on the telly at last....I'd like to see him again, he made me laugh Still don't think I'd bother to go though. It looks like such a crush...I much prefer the armchair viewing.... :

I prefer Malvern and GW Live to visit...but I allus watch the Beeb's coverage of Chelsea...I thought it was a bit posh for the likes of me..too 'establishment'...and I'm not keen on London itself. I'm not usually that fussed about the show gardens (altho this year I have a reason to want to visit one in particular) it's the marquee I head for ;D
