Wow! That was a bargain! It would cost MUCH than that new. Coo, well done Deb! Do you mean put a perch in the run section or in the house? Sorry...not sure - IMO, a roost in the house is all that is required and personally I would make it removable so you can scrape it occasionally and get easier access to the house too..

Ohh this is posh, a poultry section!!! Don't know whats got into OH he's talking about making a hen house himself now, thinks it would be better than converting the large run! How much have I been going on about these Chooks ehh? I only found out today that he believed we were going to collect eggs not hens the end of Feb! Imagine me hatching out 6 roosters I posted an add on freecycle, can you believe a lady in the same postal area is waiting for another freecycler to collect a coop today! Still I've made a nice friend, and I know Debi and I wont be the only people with hens in kingstanding! This lady also keeps ex battery farm Hens.

Wow, Debbie - what a bargain, it's fantastic! I agree with 4P - a roost inside would be perfect. Well done you for winning it.

What a shame, pipped to the post like that but how nice to have made a friend instead. Her website's great! So how did OH take to the news that chickens and not eggs are coming? :

Sean is keeping his cards close to his chest, but he's not the type to offer to do somthing if he's against it, he offered to tart up the coop! Debi and I have been invited to the afore mentioned ladys house, it will be very helful to see urban chickens first hand!

I must admit I have very rarely disinfected my hen houses....I've used Jeyes fluid I think then and then sprayed it all out with a hose and left it to dry in the sun. I do that only if I'm buying new hens so not often! I think anything would be alright as long as you leave it to dry thoroughtly - I am always somewhat dubious about what they put in these cleaners...

It's for the ground as well, we're putting the hen house where the dogs used to "frequent", so i was thinking of maybe filling up the watering can with a milton solution and watering it over them, that would be ok wouldn't it?

I'm not sure either, Debbie. I used Jeyes Fluid to disinfect this one before the hens came. I think there's one around called Virkon, something like that, which destroys things in chicken houses that ordinary disinfectant might not. But I've never bothered with it. I don't know anything about doggy areas either. Wish I could help more on this one.

I've had an ask around, Debbie. So far the consensus of opinion is that Virkon S should be used for the henhouse, after a thorough washing and leaving it to dry. Apparently Jeyes Fluid smells more effective than it actually is. For the doggy area one opinion is that since worms are species specific there shouldn't be any problems with the chickens picking up anything from the dogs. Someone else suggested removing the top layer of the soil and another opinion was to dig some garden lime into the soil, which is meant to work. Will the hens be wormed before you get them?

From what i've gathered they probably will be wormed, they're injected against most things to keep the mortality rate low whilst they are in there cages.
I'm gonna ask if they can get me some of that Virkon S through work (the pet shop) now i've got names to ask for, it makes life a bit easier!
Thank you so much for all your advice, it is most apreciated!

Just call me emseypophole!-actually that sounds rude! It arrived this morning! I'm raring to go! Mrs B if you've got and room in your hen house you should get a few of these ex-bats, they lay all year round you know! They'd also solve Ob's problem of too many eggs in the summer and none in the winter. Found a dead rat in the garden this morning, we haven't even got the hens yet!

We're on full to busting Emsey already with our six - they're big girls! I'd love some more if we had more room, I'd just keep adding and adding for sure. : If you can find a way of hanging up your corn, layer pellets etc, in a feeder so it's off the ground, that should minimize any rat visits. We did ours yesterday, as until then ours are messy eaters, so much was being spilled over the ground, asking for trouble, we hung it a few inches above. It also gives them a bit of entertainment too, I think.

Do I need to disinfect the hen house when i get it? it's brand new, so i can't really see there being many nasties in there!

With it being new there's no need whatsoever, there's no reason to. And when you clean them out there's no need to disinfect either. I put fresh straw over the mucky straw every day, I have to with my lot with the way they congregate and replace the whole lot once a week or when it needs it.
But if for some reason you ever needed to disinfect the henhouse Virkon S, according to advice, is apparently the stuff to do it with as it kills the nasties that other disinfectants won't.

We've got a few weeks to go, me and Emsey are looking into buying in bulk and then splitting it betwwen us. I've got access to lots of plastic buckets with lids at work which I'm sure will come in
