They're either Light Sussex, Rhode Island Red, Silkie or Cuckoo Maran bantam eggs. I've read somewhere too about that breed where you can tell the gender when they're chicks but I don't think it's any of those. A bantam silkie cockerel - can you just imagine it moving in on my large breed girls! ;D Sleepy has a song about a Cockerel that fits the picture you just brought to mind ;D

Anyone interested in rescuing some hens will be interested in getting in touch with Brighton animal rescue, they are re-homing over 13000 free range hens as the shells of their eggs are too thin for supermarkets There is a month to get in touch before the birds, all 18 months old are slaughtered for pet food. I saw the article in todays "Metro" no contact details included unfortunately

I hope they all find homes, I like to think they will.

That's the age they get sent to slaughter anyway so I don't get that.

Brilliant indeed! Wow - and my two Specked Sussex haven't laid a sausage for ages, or an egg even! Hazel the Welsummer's doing well, and the Marans are OK.... but we actually had to BUY some eggs last weekend! But well done that Hilda, that's really good going.

They need more grit in their diet Emsey...you can buy it from pet shops. Put a bowl in the house with their food.

I do They have like a litter tray with grit in in the run and I put a handful of oyster grit in with thier food. I've started baking thier shells too.

That's what I was going to suggest too - sounds like a question for the PP forum? Or look back over the egg section there to see if anyone's had the same problem - it's worth asking the question though, better ask the same question again than not at all.

Thinking about it tho I know they dont touch the grit in the litter tray and it feels like I sweep up more oyster grit of an evening than I give them in the morning! I'll try a finer grit in with thier food. Some days we have thick walnut whip shells. Maybe its a problem with one of the birds, I don't know who lays what.

How are the ladies doing in the snow or are you keeping them inside? They sulked in the GH all day yesterday, then they wouldn't go to bed, i had to post two through the roof of the HH then the others decided to follow. I saw Lots of tracks this morning. Up the Garden either Minni and socks or a cat and a fox, there was some difference in size. Then up by the HH/GH ting little footprints with claws eeek, please say you think its a squirrel!

A couple of ours started laying on 31st January! I think the rest are following suit - sloooowly, they haven't laid anything for months! I think one of the spotties was having a few problems getting going again, she was going through the motions in the HH but there were never any results - until yesterday. Mine are fed up to the back beak with the weather too.
