Thanks Sleepy. I'm sure Pearl's got a swagger. ;D And for Debbie and Emsey, and anyone who's contemplating a few chickens, THIS is what they'll do to your lawn if you've only got a small one(lawn) and don't let it recover between scratchings; OH made some gates to keep them out; But they've got a nice courtyard to scratch around/wreck while the grass is growing back. They are wonderful Mrs.Beige.
Just tell people that you are re-designing your lawn at the moment!
The man from the pub down the road has just been in to see if we have any shredded paper as his chickens and ducks prefer that to straw - well, he reckons his do anyway!

They are really gorgeous Debbie - and so is your lovely garden! I love it. (And the lawn needed reseeding anyway I expect... ;D)
My chickens never did damage like that to my grass...I wonder what they're finding in there - have you got a lot of leather jackets in there maybe? And have you tried covering the whole lawn with black netting? Chickens hate that stuff......

How beautiful they all are!! What breeds are they? It's just you hear names being thrown about rhode island reds, wyndiwhatsits and i haven't a clue what they look like! Thanks Debbie - the brown ones are Welsummers. The one with the darker neck is Hazel, the other one Chestnut, if it's possible to see the differences in the photo. They 'sing', dreadfully out of tune and they are quite raucous! They're a much flightier breed than the others but not aggressive at all. The spotty ones are Speckled Sussex, the one with the slightly whiter head is Spot, the other one Kitty. At the minute they are a sorry sight, feathers missing everywhere but they're growing back now after a spot of featherpecking. : The black ones are Copper Marans, the one with the bigger comb is Pearl, the other one Tiny. They have beautiful streaks of copper feathers on their necks which spangle in the sunshine, and these two rule the roost.

The man from the pub down the road has just been in to see if we have any shredded paper as his chickens and ducks prefer that to straw - well, he reckons his do anyway! Thanks Myrtle - we broke our shredder but I think it's worth getting another to shred the paper for them rather than straw. Straw's great and a good insulator but it's quite messy too, and won't rot down quickly in the composter. And the sense of satisfaction in recycling all that extra paper we all get through the door, brilliant! ;D

They are lovely Mrs b, I hope my lawn doesn't get too ruined I think if they're not allowed on the grass all the time, and are taken off now and again, the lawn will recover, or at least stand a chance, but by the time I realized just how bad the lawn was it was Winter, with no hope of it growing back, quickly. : We did allow them a quick excursion in the garden last weekend, under supervision, just for a couple of hours. They loved it. ;D

There were some iron gates in the place where he put up the wooden ones when we moved in but he took them down and moved them up the garden where we have a load of climbers growing up them. ;D

The grass was never brilliant anyway 4P - we've just cut back the apple tree which shades a lot of it so at least there'll be some more light on it for a while. The top is all dandelions! And the seed I put down in an optimistic mad half hour in January when it was mild is still just laying around, disinterested. ;D

Just popping on for a sec while OH has gone to pick the kids up from his Mom's. We cant name our 4 lovely hens till then : We picked them up from a farm about 40 Min's drive away, they were taken there from a battery farm this morning, The people were really nice and very helpful, I was asked if I wanted to pick my Hens, but how could I choose! I let the man shove 4 into the cage Debi had borrowed me ;D They were a bit stress by the journey but as soon as I let them into the run they were having a jolly good peck, two went for a look in the HH too. They've Had some water, and a peck in the food, and a nibble of the grit. They're getting a little blown about ATM, not sure weather to Shepard them into the HH? The cats were onto them straight away, Socks was slinking about doing all her tricks, and Ziggy was just looking on all wide eyed innocence, but I know his came ;D ;D Its great to see them milling about out there, I really feel like I've done some thing really worth while, and guess what, I should be getting some eggs out of it too! I don't think they'll be much trouble to look after, and if the last few hours is anything to go by, the reward will be great! One is massive, then there is another largish one and two smaller ones, one has a bare neck.-the kids are home-bye

It sounds as if they will settle in very quickly then, Emsey, which is really good news. I am just imagining you all in your garden watching them - aw, I am a bit jealous really! ;D They are very lucky chickens to have found you and Debi. I hope you get years of pleasure (and eggs) out of them.

;D I was sitting on the swing for ages, just watching ;D I've put them away for the night now, its blowing a gale and drizzling, and two hadn't the sense to go inside, they've had a busy day so an early night wont hurt. Why dont you get your self some 4p? I know you've only got one hen, have you got a HH etc? The biggest is daisy and the second bigest is Duckie, The other two are Edna and florrie. ;D
