They are quite shy and we have had the odd one in our garden here. Starling are back, Sleepy, though not many atm. Yesterday there were three in the big Sorbus and they were talking to each other, as if they were all magpies, it was really quite funny. Our garden on the whole, has gone rather quiet as of late, but we have had the odd female Sparrowhawk flying around, so whether that has anything to do with it, I don't know. One made me late picking the boys up from school last Friday!! We still are getting the House Sparrows, Goldfinches, Collared Doves, Blackbirds and the Starlings, so can't complain, toooooooooo much, I suppose! Just wish we had some Blue and Great Tits come to the feeders. Nextdoor had some Great Tits nesting in their nesting box this year, but I hardly ever see them on their feeders, let alone ours! I think a sparrowhawk being around does keep the birds under cover and quiet. They're not daft ;D I saw a sparrowhawk take something from my garden last year. I only saw it as it was taking off. Dunno if it was a bird or a mouse. I read on another forum last week, that someone actually timed (2mins 10 secs) how long it took a Sparrowhawk to kill a Collared Dove in their garden, how sick is that? I'm not a member of that forum, just found it, while doing a search for something else BoP related.

Thrushes-- Are they in decline? I haven't seen one for ages. This is a silly question--Maddon, but if I put an imitation Bird amongst the conifer trees near a Nest Box would this encourage similar birds to Nest there?

We've had a run of magpies in our garden lately...2 or 3 at a time. *Wonders why that is?* We also have the usual sparrows, crows, jackdaws, tits and robins.

Ive seen a couple in the litttle park behind us but they never see to come in the garden ;D which Im pleased about really I dont want to encourage them as they take the young birds out of their nest and kill them!!! Once years ago in our other house I had my Moter and three of my sisters for the day, we were ssat round the table eating lunch it was in front of the patio doors, all of a sudden a magpie flew down and tapped at the window with its beack my sister opened the door and it hopped in and sat on the bar across the bottom of the table! my Mother was getting flappy so I chased it outside, it was very tame, my Son was most upset when he came home from school that I hadn,t kept it.

We get a few Magpies but I don't really like them. There are quite a few superstitions about them. My Nan always used to say 'Good morning Mr Magpie'. It was something to do with not having bad luck.

I don't know tbh, but I don't think it would be a good idea, if I'm honest. If it brought the birds in, you would then have to get rid, if birds took over the box, as it would upset them while nesting. This is assuming the birds won't know it's a fake in the first place! If the box is in a good place and there are birds about, they will find it. As someone already said, no question is a silly question!

There is something going on outside, so think there is a BoP about, though I can't see one, atm. The Starlings and Doves, even the Crows are unsettled!

Never did find out what it was, though I think I briefly saw a female Kestrel, but I only saw it for about half a second, as it flew over the house, so can't be sure.

Untill I visited this "Birds visiting your Garden" Thread I always took Birds for granted in the garden but now I am becoming quite interested--Thanks Maddon--(Keith) I spotted a Pheasant for the first time on the large area of Grass (it is supposed to be a Lawn) that I overlook from the kitchen window. I tried to get a close-up photograph of it but it scuttled away amongst some Bushes-I did get a shot but I think it was too far away to see what the Bird was- I have also noticed a Wren this morning it was in the flower border among some dried leaves. And I still have my lovely Blackbird around (I think a Cat must have damaged one of its wings) so it cant fly very well. This is the Pheasant I photographed--it came out better than I thought it would. The other shots were taken on that grass you can see behind it--

Its probably an escapee Biggs the Farmers on Greengrass lane were out shooting about 5 weeks ago! I have only seen one since! the field used to full of them. I heard the blackbird singing when I was hanging washing out this morning ;D is that a good sign do you think? Ive had plenty of little coal tits the last couple of days they look smaller than the blue tits.

F-Cheery-- Those are brilliant photographs --Good shot of the Magpie--on the Conifer Tree--Keep them coming-- Maggs-- I must be a 'Softee'--Just think of these lovely creatures being shot just for us to eat and enjoy! I hope it finds his way back to where he belongs. A Blackbird singing- that is also a lovely sound to hear --makes you think Spring is around the corner. I haven't seen any Coal Tits 0r Blue Tits for ages--
