The witch's nightjar thread has reminded me of a bird I haven't seen or heard since my childhood days, the jay. I loved watching these birds in the garden. Most days we saw one. Right that's made up my mind. I am going to find the list of the birds I found for a 3hr sponsored birdwatch, from when I was a kid and go back to my childhood village to see how many I can spot again. If I remember correctly, I alongwith a friend, found 114 species in the three hours! I wonder how many I will spot this time? www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/j/jay/Keith

I've only once seen a Jay in this garden, but we do see them from time to time when walking in nearby woodland. Sounds like you really miss the countryside Keith .......... perhaps your next house will/should be on the edge of a village surrounded by woodland.

We looked into a countryside place when we moved here, but practical things deterred us. Like if I couldn't drive again (through medical reasons) then the school journey would be a pain. 'Hopefully' there won't be a next house, as we really have to think of the kids this time. Eldest is hating being the new kid on the block! We saw jays nearly every day, normally getting pestered by the little birds, but I would rather see them than magpies, anyday!! Keith
