I was delighted to see a little blue tit enter the bird box/house which is attached to my neighbours arbour. I was confused though to see him come out with something small and brown, rather like a raisin. What could it be? And is he/she likely to be nesting?

Still just looking I would guess. Bluetits take longer to sort out their housing requirements than The witch does

Heavens!!!!! Well if they decide to nest nearby I'll be pleased, but still worried because of Poppy.

Perhaps she was giving the place a once over and spring clean before nest building Plocket

Heavens!!!!! Well if they decide to nest nearby I'll be pleased, but still worried because of Poppy. If the box is really high - over 6 foot up and not in a position that Poppy can climb to, they will be just fine. My cats only become interested in nest boxes once the chick have hatched and start chirping at their parents for food - until then, they seem none the wiser to the nests existence. I took this photo a couple of years ago i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/The witch-in-Norfolk/Birds/Bluetit.jpg[/IMG]

Unfortunately Poppy sits on the arbour! I'm going to have to take a photo so you can see but I think Poppy could actually get her paw into the bird house. I adore that photo you took - the fledgeling looks as though he's saying "Oi! Where's my dinner?"

I don't think it was used last year. But as you can see from the photo, the arbour is right next to our fence so perfect for Poppy to hop onto, and the bird house is on the far corner. She sits surveying the road and open land beyond as if she's a queen - birds would be bonkers if they nested there.

What a daft place to site a bird house! I put one on the back of my shed at the lottie but theres no way a cat could reach it, Im hoping the robin will nest there and Ive hung up an old kettle as an alternative. Wouldnt it be nice if both were used?

It would be perfect if both were used. Fingers crossed!
I've never put any bird boxes up because of Poppy, and my neighbour put that one up long after we moved in and long after he knew we had a cat. In the future though, when Poppy is no longer with us, I would consider putting a bird box up, probably on the house wall.

I must admit last year i put up a bird box in a similar position as thats the only place i could reach at the time and within a few weeks the blue tits nested in there before i could put it in a better position. I then added some trellis alonlg the fence to stop the cats getting close. This year its still in the same position and they blue tits are nesting again.

THIS is why I'm so concerned about the bluetits - Poppy is sitting right in front of the entrance - only about 1ft away! I went round to our neighbours this morning and told them that I'd seen lots of activity at the bird box, and that if they want to shoo Poppy away, spray her with a water gun - whatever - they are more than welcome!

Oh dear - naughty Poppy - but cats will be cats. Can you but something onto of the pergola to make it too uncomfortable for her to sit on?
