I just took a very pleasant walk through the fields around the office. Lovely to be on your own in the sun with lots of space around you....
No larks ascending though.
Anyway, to get back to the point, there are a huge amount of flowering hawthorns between the fields but I didn't see a single bee.
Do bees not like hawthorn or is this indicative of our bee shortage?

They like hawthorn Mick, so maybe there are less bees around, or they have another nectar source nearby. What larks do you see, Wood or Sky? Skylarks just go straight up, whereas Woodlarks stop briefly on their way up. We get Skylarks where we are, but as yet no woodlarks.
