It was the second day at the new school so this morning I collared the nice headmaster and asked him about building a wildlife tower at the school.......start as you mean to go on! (And on and on....) I think that, as it's a fairly small school, it would be nice for each year group to have their own palette section which they can fill with stick bundles, twigs, dried leaves, crumpled newspaper in pots etc etc which will hopefully be used by any passing wildlife to overwinter in and which will be used for studies in class. There just happens to be a very large and over grown Bamboo which is perfect for chopping bits off to make a Hoverflies winter home with too..... I also would like to get a good selection of early nectar plants in the grounds, some Ivies and a small wild plant bit sown too.........and next Spring we can decorate the tower with some bee plants and herbs in pots.......lots of plans again! The Head seemed very keen too and is going to talk to the teacher responsible for all the Green things and arrange for us to meet.... ;D I'm doing something similar with my clients at Ecotech too. Fun fun fun And then there's the lovely big pond at school.................I'm trying not to be too pushy.......... :

Thanks The witch, I hope so too...... There are many many of our native bugs, butterflies, moths and smaller mammals in a very alarming decline now and that is why it is sooo imperative that we catch the interest of this new generation of children right from the start........there are all sorts of reasons but it is the responsibility of all gardeners (IMO) to plant with native wildlife needs in mind. We could make such a difference..........and encouraging the children to be aware is the first stage as far as I'm concerned. Without that we are all of us wasting our time. I have high hopes for this new school......they have a Green Policy , they have a teacher assigned to foster awareness in school and they already have a garden which just needs a bit of redesigning. And they have a vegetable patch! Small but with potential.........and now they have acquired a fanatical parent who intends to encourage/force/shove them to do even more...........heehee.....I won't let this be the failure the other Club was....I have experience now..

Swaffham is a quite attractive old market town which has recently figured in a TV series starring our Norfolk and National treasure, Stephen Fry, you might have heard of him, you might not! Unfortunately the Ecotech website is rather uninspired and doesn't do the place justice at all. I am really thrilled to be working there - I love it and everything it stands for

He is also a manic depressive and there was a very good documentary about how he has coped with it. We love small places, villages etc., so would enjoy living in a place like yours! Our grandchildren had a silk plant when they were at Kindy and it produced Monarch butterflies much to heir surprise and wonder! We hope they will grow up to appreciate our environment.

The Headmaster was waiting to speak to me this morning. The teacher in charge of the garden is very pleased I want to help, thinks the wildlife tower is a brilliant idea and wants us to have a meeting early next week. Sounds good already doesn't it?

Oh I simply won't have time too Sleepy......but I don't think it will be a problem as the teacher is very keen to revamp the garden. The Head wants to build an outside teaching area and they have already tried to get funding. The Head was very keen to have my opinion - he seems to think I'm an expert.... They both want to involve as many pupils and teachers as possible so I think it will be different at this school right from start. I hope it will be.......... This is great you know - doing this stuff at Ecotech and now at the school again - it does give me a real buzz....I am in danger of becoming an obsessive bore......

Great news 4p. The gardening club thread is BACK!!!! I have just been browsing through--and came across this Post- Gardening Club-- Oh that takes me back many moons ago--It takes me back to when (I think) my love of Gardening started. I was about 14years old. I remember there was a School Gardening Club and I joined, was given my own little area to cultivate. I started off with Lettuce and Radish's and was so thrilled that I had grown something edible I wanted to try something else. I think Broad Beans were next-- I think Marigolds were my first attempt at flowers-

Oh yes! I was really very disappointed with the other school and my own feeble attempts so was feeling a bit hesitant about this new school. I feel very strongly (as you know.....) but was going to feel my way a bit more than I did last time. Now, thanks to Biggles post, I'm just going to DO it!

OK........................................ But this time I shall try and get the teachers 'on board'...............that was the big mistake I made. I assumed they were all as keen as me but they weren't........but this time there really IS a teacher who is really into it all so that's a much better start!
