He's a Pacific Parrotlett and we think he may have had a stroke. He was fine this morning and this afternoon he was laying on his side on the bottom of his cage. Joey is one of the few birds we have that actually spends most of his time in *lock down* simply because he will attack and try to beat up any other bird even though he's about the size of a canary. LOL! Any way he was semi conscious and we gave him some warm IV LRS fluids and dexamethasone. He started to open his eyes and he's got a head tilt but his right side seems very weak. I know he's really sick if I can hold him in my hand! He's tiny but he's a biter! After about two hours he was lookin' better but still very weak. He had a drink of water and can hold his head up now. We have him loosely wrapped in the towel and a heating pad underneath and he's in a cat carrier for now with a shallow dish of water and some millet (his favourite). Ya know? We just can't have ONE thing happen ... They are always in multiples it seems. While we're trying to revive Joey, one of the cats had horrible bloody diarrhea in the bathroom and Rani peed in the hall. ~*~*~Pets are relaxing!~*~*~ Then there is the remarkable Olive, the Yellow nape Amazon Parrot, who watched some of the drama after he had his initial treatments. Awww. Who's the pretty birdy? Sick birdy? Awwww. What's up? I seriously think she understands something is wrong! We just looked in on Joey and he seems to be OK. Well .... he's alive and seems more alert but we'll leave him alone and let him rest keeping our fingers crossed that he'll survive.

Thanks CPB. Joey had another stroke late yesterday and then he had several short seizures and he died. I first saw him at a pet store 10 years ago. He was in a small cage near the cash register. The owner of the store kept grabbing him out of the cage and handing him to people to "play with" him. He was soooo frightened. The owner of the store was holding him upside down and telling everyone he liked it! :-( I felt so sorry for the little bird. I did not need another bird but the thought of him being mistreated really haunted me. I went back to the store the following day and purchased him just to get him away from the store owner! We tried several times to have him out to mingle with the other birds but he always attacked them. He was imprisoned in a large cage and he got free time in another bird-less room. I don't know how old Joey was when I got him or how long they live. He was so darned cute! We miss him. :-(

Well, I think poor Joey had a good life after you rescued him C3D. And surely 10 years is a long life for a little bird, isn't it? Was it a stroke he suffered do you think? If so, he would have been unable to fly afterwards, most likely, so I think it was his time. That's the way to consolation for the loss of a pet.

Sorry joey didn't make it, but I think 10 years is a long life for a bird. You gave him a good life. My nan has a pair of lovely peechy birds, I think they are called rosie bourkes? S he has had them 10 years now and every years for about 3 years they laid an egg on her birthday! One of them died last week, the other one looks so lonely, she tried moving his cage so he was next to her budgie but they didn't get on, so he's alone again now. Nan says she wont have anymore birds as she is getting on a bit now.

Thanks 4P and Emseypop. I had a 16 year old dove who suffered a stroke some years ago. She was very weak on the right side; her right wing drooped and her right leg was weak. She was a ground dweller for 3 months. Her mate stayed on the ground with her, preening her feathers and just sitting next to her during that whole time! Slowly she recovered and was able to fly again but she was always a little weak on that side. She died at the age of 20. We had hopes that Joey would recover too. At least to some extent but it was not to be. God wanted a cranky little parrot Home with Him.

Hi Maggyd and thank you too. Little Joey had *every reason* to be grumpy and we never held that against him! His kind of parrot is known to be a bit more territorial than others but that did not matter. Joey was small and just wanted to feel safe, secure and loved. He had that and more in our home! .... But he is still missed.

Hi C3D
I’m so sorry that you have lost a pet too. It doesn’t matter how long you have had them, it’s always hard isn’t it. It sounds like he had 10 great years with you though. Thinking of you. - Hugs.
A.x
