Ok so what's your worst cooking disaster?
Mine was a birthday cake for mum when I was a teenager. It came out like a rock cake but it was supposed to be a sponge cake. I've never been too keen to bake sponge cakes since then, but can turn out a mean batch of chocolate brownies, and today I made a fantastic birthday cake for MIL - which was basically like a cooked mousse!

My first attempt at making jam It turned into black glue and I had to air the whole house out what a stink! The big pan I used had to be binned no way I was ever cleaning that!

This made me laugh P . When a teenager (not that long ago ), I thought a microwave oven was the same as a normal oven but just smaller. My M&D went out one night and I decided to cook myself a pie from the freezer : I put the forzen pie in the microwave and put it on for 40 mins - including the tin foil dish it came in ;D The burning smell took a long long time to go away and my parents delighted in telling anyone who would listen to the story.

I must admit that despite attaining my half century I am still a dismal cook! It's years of cooking for a fussy veggie and small children wot's dun it. I can still ruin a cake, burn the toast, make a sauce lumpy and overcook the sprouts at the drop of a hat. I make good choccy cookies though!
Karenwl, I have a fail safe recipe for scones but they are cooked under a grill not in an oven. They rise really well but must be eaten the same day. Which is a shame..

Here it is for the piggley amongst us: Sorry it's in imperial, very old book/very old owner...... 1lb S R flour 2 teaspoons of baking powder pinch of salt 2 ounces of butter 2 large eggs (beaten) 1/4 pint and 4 tablespoons of milk
Sieve flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Rub in the butter. Mix the egg and milk together and blend into the flour mixture to form a fairly soft dough.Turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth. Roll out until 1/2 inch thick and cut into 2" rounds (makes about 16). Turn grill onto highest setting and line grill pan with silver foil. Places the scones onto the pan and turn grill down to its lowest setting. Grill the scones for 10 minutes, turn and grill for a further 10 minutes until well risen and cooked through. Eat at ONCE with butter and jam.
