What a FINE way to spend a morning! I've just been at the GC walking round with a nice young man buying fruit trees and bits and pieces.....spent £340! Got about another £1200 to go....... I got a "Cheal's Weeping Cherry", a "Cox's Orange Pippin" and "James Grieve" Apples and a gorgeous dark red Crab Apple "Profusion" I couldn't resist, (they didn't have a Sweet Cherry). Also got a really snazzy plastic wheelbarrow, a slimline water butt and kit, and a small selection of herbs to start the sensory garden: Rosemary, Lavenders, 3 types of Sage, Curry plant, Thymes, Golden Marjoram and a dwarf Oregano I'd never seen before. Also got tree stakes and plastic ties and a few bags of proper soil enriching stuff especially for friut trees plus some playground standard forest bark to mulch them all with. I've now got to find a source of top soil as we'll be building the raised beds as soon as possible so we can go and get another several hundred pounds worth of plants for them. I think I'm quite satisfied with that lot for a first foray....same again next week. NB Just want to apologise to Sleepy for not using Deacon's as he did so much research for me - I have to plant the trees as soon as possible for the Grant report and they couldn't deliver until next year. I'd like to get a family tree in the school somewhere - maybe next Spring.

Poop! I didn't know but I shall file it away for future reference..thanks The witch! We've ordered from Hockwold though so at least it's a local source. First bit of interest shown by some Mum's in all the rebuilding and digging up today - a very nice lady came up and asked me what fruit trees we were planting as some of the Mum's were concerned about attracting insects - like wasps..................... I was very diplomatic. At least someone's noticed we've dug out the enormous shrubs anyway............

How daft is that? Wasps are only a pain when they go sugar crazy, and if theres fruit, why would they bother the kids? The lottie has fruit trees all over it, and fruit bushes in most plots too but the wasps never trouble us, too busy .

Isn't it typical??? I was a bit flabberghasted, to tell the truth! Wasps? What? I suppose it doesn't count if you sit in the playground over the road and feed your kids sweets, then drop the rubbish in the bin......wasps don't bother you then? Honestly!!!! I am not deterred. Never surrender. Never give in (unless you have a bad back)
Which I have after an afternon carting lettuce boxes about - time for a nice hot bath. See you later. Nearly Saturday!!!!
Nothing can go wrong. Bleep. Nothing can go wrong. Bleep. Nothing can go wrong. Bleep....................... ;D
NO! Don't tempt fate........

Ice lollies and sweets have got my kids stung before, the wasps always landed on their necks and they flinched and got stung, twice in one week that happened! Now I tell them to "be a tree" .........Just stay very still till it flies off, never seen a wasp sting a tree, have you? NOTHING will go wrong. (determined, I am!)

I've never asked a tree though........ MUST get in the bath - I smell worser than a skunk. You'd never think lettuces were smelly but they are (although not as stinky as leeks).

Here's the area I planted yesterday with the new fruit trees. From the left: Cheal's Weeping Cherry, Apple Cox's Orange Pippin, a dark leaved Crab Apple "Profusion" (behind the train) and at the back an Apple "James Grieve". I still have to remove all the grass ready for bark and dig out the rest of the mank shrubs. I have earmarked a space for a Pear tree too. Sorry, it's not a good picture.

I am! And this morning the new birdbox camera arrived. Coo! We're waiting for the man to do the path shifting and hard landscaping and then we can build the raised beds and fill them. We have to put some of the shifted soil in them or we'll have to pay to have it removed. I don't think it will be a problem though as although it's sandy, it's not too bad all in all. I might put a bag of goat muck at the bottom of each one......then it's just the greenhouse and we're away - ready for next year!

You have made some real progress there babe well done! I wonder how much it would have cost the school to employ a landscaper to do what you have done? I hope they appreciate you and your volunteers!
