No no no Emsey! Do NOT let him make you feel like that - he's obviously a prat! Go to a cheapo store and get some black membrane, save newspapers, cardboard, anything you can use as a weed suppressing mulch and try and find stones, half bricks etc to use as weights......just try and cover as much as you can to keep it smothered until you can dig it - weedkill it if you have too.....but don't let an officious, unsympathetic wally like him make you feel bad. Make some pegs with old canes or similar to hold it down....You have children and a lot less time than him and you are doing the best you can. AND it's the summer holiday.........you will be able to make a bit more time soon and then next year hopefully Debi will be back to help you. You are doing a grand job - don't let him let you give it all up.....please? X

Thanks 4p Been haveing a moan to Debi and she says the same. Will do all of the above, and see if things improve when the kids are back at school and should be able to catch up a bit over the winter. Maybe I will fit in more for the next growing season and everything will seem better once Debi is up to coming out to play again too

Good! There are loads of us who have given up our lottie's because of the pressures of time and offspring. It would be such a shame if you did so - 'specially with the chickens at home....and it's not that long until next season when you can both get going again...

Hi Emsey, I echo everything 4P has said. Don't be intimidated. This year has been very difficult with the weather, the other plot holders may be able to choose when they go, it's not like that for everyone. Old carpet is another good way to supress weeds. Good luck

My mom is gonna come on Sunday plus I'll try to go down there too. Hell hath no fury like a heavily pregnant woman scorned! my mom's gonna get my dad to come down on one of the days too! He's a big bloke to put it mildly, and got a very big mouth, so prehaps if he shows his face and they realise there's another bloke there they might back off a bit.

Emsey, you sound a bit down all round, understandable atm though sugar. The allotment is supposed to be where you can relax and have a bit of 'me' time so don't get too fraught about what other people think. It's been a challenge for you, with Debi being out of action and it can only get better....next year is a new start - so shrug your shoulders, ignore the old g*ts who carp and plan for next year - that'll get your enthusiasm sparked again. I do it every year about this time....! ;D

They sound like a bunch of old women and Debi's dad's appearance'll do the trick. It gets my goat how bullish men go to ground or are never around at the time when there's a man around to have a go at them, but you can put money on the fact that they'll all wriggle back out the woodwork as soon as you're there on your own! We gave up our plot, we never really got going on it. But the plot was surrounded by people who lived their lives up there, just like you say Emsey, and you could tell - their mentality was equal to the ones who've been giving you a hard time. Our car wasn't working, we coudn't get there and it wasn't long before they went bleating to the council about the plot not being worked, and our plot was really overgrown when we took it on..... They used to watch us all the time too, just standing there silently and watching. They are a type and a very pathetic one at that. You've done so well with your plot, don't let them get to you. Why not get Sean up there a few times giving them the odd glare or two, until they realize that you have a male presence to hand any time you need one.......

Like Mrs.B says, some men are like that - our neighbour was (he has left his wife or she threw him out - far better off without him), he had a go at me through the fence because when his boys came round for the their ball for the umpteenth time I asked them to be more careful - didn't have a go at hubby though strange that! Some are just bullies. Don't worry about them, do you plot as and when you can. We will have some old carpet and underlay next week if it is of any help - just let me know.

Been to the Lottie, its been strimmed, and looks like it'll rake and turn over nicely. I had the kids with me and they were very good, even slightly helpful at times. Went for tea in the shed and listen to John criticizing all and sundry, I just kept my mouth shut. They seemed to like the kids, Holly was quite entertaining, chattering away, not like Holly at all really. One bloke was saying he'd been at the allotment since 5.40! I thought 8.45 was early! Feeling a bit more positive today, still looking for ideas of what I can put in this time of year, I'll get some winter onion sets, is it too late for carrots? Autumn king?

I am so glad you are feeling more positive today. Sounds like everyone has to take a turn at being criticised by John then, sadly it has been yours recently. At the allotment since 5.40, well that is great for him but not everyone can do that. Well done emsey and take heart, it will be how you want it in no time. And as Debidoos said, with herself, her mom and her dad there over the next few days they will wonder what has hit them! It will put them back in their boxes!

Does John grow potatoes? I think he must do, the amount of chips he seems to have on his shoulder! He sounds like the kind of person who wouldn't be happy if you gave him everything he ever wanted, there'd still be something to moan about. He sounds too like Marvin the Paranoid Android in the Hitchhikers Guide - if you've ever seen that Emsey, when he goes droning on about all things wrong liken him to Marvin - he'll never be able to upset you again. John's been there since 5.40!!!!!!!!That's nice, I think.....he must like the P&Q and solitude of that kind of time up there or he's just completely mad..........

I say he's John number two, I got an uneasy feeling of this one too. They were all excited as the list of items for this years 'show' had just came out. The bloke who is organising the show is really nice, and is doing it for fun, there are 21 categories and there are 3 prizes in each, I think its so everybody can win, the prizes are 10p or summat, and prolly a certificate, I think the real prize is glory : Some are taking it more seriously than others I wont enter but am looking forward to some people watching, should be entertaining. I shall re-name John Marvin. Thats him to a tea.

If you can ignore them, Emsey, its the worst thing you can do to them. The poor things crave attention I`m afraid.

Enjoy! There'll be bitchy asides to you from contestant no.1 about contestant no 7, and no 7'll have it in for no 16, they'll all be stabbing each other in the back, and after the show there'll be so many sour grapes between them all they'll ALL want you as their ally and buddy......

Sorry you are having a bad time emsey. Just ignore the stupid old duffers they are not worth it, its ok for them if they are retired and have got all the hours to put in. They should not treat their plot holders like that, you do what you can when you can and stuff them. Tell them the vice chairman from york will come down and bang there heads together, we try and help other plot holders not have a go at them Evil G--s Keep your chin up babe LOL Karen x

Cheers Karen, I suppose I have to admit that in strimming the plot they have helped me, however, they could've offered to do it in the first place, if they didn't want the weeds to spread and they had the means.

Emsey, on our plots if they are overgrown we either strim them or weedkill if they are not used, we do what we can to help, its just a shame all allotments are not the same, if i lived nearer i would come and help.
